14. Thank you, Jackeens, for this wonderful selection of memories!
The problem is that I am hardly able to see them or type this because the tears are streaming down my face.
So many memories ... so many years ... so much tragedy ... and so much hope, dedication and inspiration! We who have Irish ancestry can point with justified pride to the Kennedy brothers, who collectively symbolized so much that is good about the human condition, who understood that with great privilege comes great responsibility, and who attempted throughout their lives to exercise that great responsibility judiciously, especially to help those who were downtrodden and had no one else to speak for them.
They are at long last reunited, and also reunited with all too many of their loved ones who preceded them to the Great Unknown. There must be such great rejoicing there this day. It is we who have been left behind here who will continue to miss them all. There are and have been too few like them.
We must also continue to fight for what they would have continued to fight for if they were here.
May the road rise ... we will indeed not see Ted's like again.

40. Thank you. I am so grateful not only for all this great man has done for his country
but grateful as well I have been able to appreciate him and his accomplishments. When Jack Kennedy was elected President, I was unable to appreciate him and what he meant to us because he was--so sorry to have to admit this--a Catholic. I was deeply entrenched in evangelical/fundamental Christianity (a total misnomer I now know) and our pastor preached a sermon after the 1960 election warning all us "good Baptists" that JFK would do away with term limits, lead forever and we would all have to become Catholics or face horrible consequences. The assassination was, of course, "God's way of saving us from that fate". It shames me to say these words. I was very young, a Bible college student, and willing to buy into those lies. I thank God (if he truly exists) that I lived long enough to regret all that, and that Ted Kennedy lived long enough to do all he did to make our country better. His legacy is incomparable, and let's pass the Ted Kennedy Health Reform Bill!

Blessings and thanks for these photos, Jackeens. You are truly a DU treasure.

Thank you, Jackeens, for being stronger than me and posting these wonderful tributes to Senator Kennedy.

And I'll add:

Teddy fought right up to the end, and even had the presence of mind and the fight to try to fill his seat before his departure.

It doesn't get any more impressive, more courageous, more genuine, than that.

I heard about Ted's death on the radio this morning. I knew it was coming, but it still hit me very hard. I thank Ted for all he did for those of us who were forgotten by the other politicians. Seeing the photo of him on stage with Mrs. King & Caesar Chavez reminds me of how much he and his brothers fought for rights for those who were being denied them. Unfortunately we may never see another of his kind who has the power that comes from being a Kennedy & takes the responsibility to be representative in government.

61. Rest, now, Senator Kennedy...
THANATOPSIS

by: William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878)

O him who in the love of Nature holds
Communion with her visible forms, she speaks
A various language; for his gayer hours
She has a voice of gladness, and a smile
And eloquence of beauty, and she glides
Into his darker musings, with a mild
And healing sympathy, that steals away
Their sharpness, ere he is aware. When thoughts
Of the last bitter hour come like a blight
Over thy spirit, and sad images
Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall,
And breathless darkness, and the narrow house,
Make thee to shudder and grow sick at heart;--
Go forth, under the open sky, and list
To Nature's teachings, while from all around--
Earth and her waters, and the depths of air--
Comes a still voice--Yet a few days, and thee
The all-beholding sun shall see no more
In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground,
Where thy pale form was laid with many tears,
Nor in the embrace of ocean, shall exist
Thy image. Earth, that nourish'd thee, shall claim
Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again,
And, lost each human trace, surrendering up
Thine individual being, shalt thou go
To mix for ever with the elements,
To be a brother to the insensible rock,
And to the sluggish clod, which the rude swain
Turns with his share, and treads upon. The oak
Shall send his roots abroad, and pierce thy mould.

Yet not to thine eternal resting-place
Shalt thou retire alone, nor couldst thou wish
Couch more magnificent. Thou shalt lie down
With patriarchs of the infant world--with kings,
The powerful of the earth--the wise, the good,
Fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,
All in one mighty sepulchre. The hills
Rock-ribb'd and ancient as the sun,--the vales
Stretching in pensive quietness between;
The venerable woods; rivers that move
In majesty, and the complaining brooks
That make the meadows green; and, pour'd round all,
Old Ocean's grey and melancholy waste,--
Are but the solemn decorations all
Of the great tomb of man. The golden sun,
The planets, all the infinite host of heaven,
Are shining on the sad abodes of death,
Through the still lapse of ages. All that tread
The globe are but a handful to the tribes
That slumber in its bosom.--Take the wings
Of morning, pierce the Barcan wilderness,
Or lose thyself in the continuous woods
Where rolls the Oregon and hears no sound
Save his own dashings--yet the dead are there:
And millions in those solitudes, since first
The flight of years began, have laid them down
In their last sleep--the dead reign there alone.
So shalt thou rest: and what if thou withdraw
In silence from the living, and no friend
Take note of thy departure? All that breathe
Will share thy destiny. The gay will laugh
When thou art gone, the solemn brood of care
Plod on, and each one as before will chase
His favourite phantom; yet all these shall leave
Their mirth and their employments, and shall come
And make their bed with thee. As the long train
Of ages glides away, the sons of men,
The youth in life's green spring, and he who goes
In the full strength of years, matron and maid,
The speechless babe, and the gray-headed man--
Shall one by one be gathered to thy side
By those who in their turn shall follow them.

So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan which moves
To that mysterious realm where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged by his dungeon; but, sustain'd and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

He surely lived, so that others could live better.

70. Great pictures. Thanks! I remember Teddy when he was younger (and I was, too).
He was the HOT Kennedy.

He'll be missed. Who will carry his torch?

72. Wow - thank you! And who's on the sled with him?
Is it one of Bobby's kids?
Doesn't look like one of his...

Love that pic. So many good ones.

73. Hi mascarax, that's Ted Kennedy Jr - another photo here:

Edward Kennedy Jr., rides on his father's back, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as they sled down the hill in the front yard of their home on Monday, Dec. 26, 1973 in McLean, Va. (AP Photo/John Duricka) (http://www.kansascity.com/934/gallery/1406412.html)

This is Ted Jr leaving hospital the same year after he had a leg amputated due to cancer:

And he had the same shock of blonde hair many years later:

74. Thanks, Jackeens! I can see it's Ted Jr. in the front view photo
I love those (but then I love sliding!).

I always expected Ted Jr. to go into politics...

I feel for Joan today too.
