Is God protecting Fla. at Gov. Crist's request?
Could it be divine intervention that's kept Florida safe from hurricanes since Gov. Charlie Crist took office?

Crist said he isn't trying to take credit, but he told a group of real estate agents Friday that he's had prayer notes placed in the Western Wall in Jerusalem each year and no major storms have hit Florida.

Crist noted that just before his election in 2006, Florida had been affected by a total of eight hurricanes in 2004 and 2005.

"Do you know the last time it was we had a hurricane in Florida? It's been awhile. In 2007, I took my first trade mission. Do you know where I went?" said Crist, a Methodist, referring to a trip to Israel.

He then told of going to the Western Wall and inserting a note with a prayer. He said it read, "Dear God, please protect our Florida from storms and other difficulties. Charlie."

"Time goes on _ May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December _ no hurricanes," Crist said. "Thank God."

Last year, Sen. Nan Rich was traveling to Israel and Crist asked her to put a note in the Western Wall, a holy site in Judaism and a place where written prayers are traditionally placed.

"It was the same note, by the way, the same prayer," Crist said.

This year a friend was going to Israel and he gave him a prayer to put in the Western Wall.

2. To be fair, since I've lived with my wife (seven years), we've had a stuffed
squirrel sitting in front of our house on the short fence of our patio (sometimes he hides a key, but don't tell anyone). We have never been broken in to. I credit Squirrely with the protection. He's a badass. :)

I've also prayed not to be killed by velociraptors.

It seems to be working.

4. This must be unrec day at DU. Nice post, not deserving of unrecs.
I think people are misusing them now.

Crist is catering to the extreme religious right now as he runs for Senate.

6. Well,
if it worked for Inglis, FL, why not for the whole state?

Florida mayor bans Satan from town

Will the idiocy ever end?

14. wow
years ago, when I was in high school, we used to drive to Inglis because there was a cheap motel there and no one's parents would be going by there to see cars in the parking lot. It was a lot better than parking out in the woods.

7. So what about Tropical Storm Fay that dumped over two feet of rain on Tallahassee last fall
That did nearly as much damage as some hurricanes - we were without power for four days and many roads were flooded. Fay made landfall in Florida FOUR times.

Tropical Storm Fay was a tropical storm and the sixth named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. Fay formed from a vigorous tropical wave on August 15 over the Dominican Republic. It passed over the island of Hispaniola, into the Gulf of Gonâve, across the island of Cuba, and made landfall on the Florida Keys late in the afternoon of August 18 before veering into the Gulf of Mexico. It again made landfall near Naples, Florida, in the early hours of August 19 and progressed northeast through the Florida peninsula, emerging into the Atlantic Ocean near Melbourne on August 20. Extensive flooding took place in parts of Florida as a result of its slow movement. On August 21, it made landfall again near New Smyrna Beach, Florida, moving due west across the Panhandle, crossing Gainesville and Panama City, Florida. As it zigzagged from water to land, it became the first storm in recorded history to make landfall in Florida four times.<1> Thirty-six deaths were blamed on Fay.<2> Eleven tornadoes were spawned within the United States due to Fay. Damage from Fay was heavy, estimated at $560 million.<3>

Technically Fay never made it to a hurricane, but it had more impact than some hurricanes I've been through, Governor Crist!

10. Whoa - God left a sign for Charlie! Looook at the middle photo...
You can clearly see the "CC" initials!

I see that as a warning sign to dear Charlie from God: "Stop talking nonsense, and stop pandering, ya twit!"
(Whereupon Charlie probably just joined Twitter, but he needs to *listen* to the Lord!)

Hmm, if you look closely, can you see Charlie's face and white hair in the top photo?

Think about it, Charlie.

16. I think it is a stupid thing to say
And really, it is a VERY stupid thing to say unless he really believes it. Basically he is gambling that there won't be a hurricane hitting florida over the next couple of months. There is a very good chance, rationally, that there will be. Then everyone is going to pull this out and he'll have some splaining to do. So I'm left to assume that he actually believes this. Man talk about some hubris.

They'll claim that God is angry at all the uppity gays and women. It's been done before. Pat Robertson does it all the time.

See, you can fall out of favor of God very easily. It's called the Wrath of God. The other side of the coin from the Grace of God. In essence it's all a toss of the coin, like in No Country for Old Men. Heads you lose and Tails God wins. Either way you lose and God wins.
