White House officials "convinced" that "some detainees" must be detained indefinitely (NYT)
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 11:30 PM by Adir Pykhtin
A Daily Kos diary had reported that NBC's Justice Correspondent had said that the Obama administration had found no grounds to detain any Guantanamo prisoner indefinitely.

But this claim is contradicted by White House officials who told the New York Times -in an article to be printed tomorrow-- the following:

Officials said the most problematic group was made up of detainees to be held without trial, who are deemed by the administration to be too dangerous to release but who cannot be tried because evidence against them may not be usable in court. Administration officials say they hope this group will be as small as possible, acknowledging opposition by civil liberties groups. But they said they were convinced there were some detainees who must be detained without charges because of their backgrounds, like extensive time in a militant training camp or a long association with a terrorist group.

The conflicting stories seem to be endless regarding this issue.

1. You know what...at this point I'm waiting for the White House to make a public statement.

At this point if it doesn't come directly from the President's mouth in a few weeks, maybe days, then I'm holding back on all judgement, because the news is all over the place.

4. Sources or not,
this is the problem I've suspected for a long time: GOOD EVIDENCE not available, due to lousy circumstances surrounding capture/detainment/etc., so full and effective trials not possible. along with solid reasons to believe some are just too dangerous to let out.

I suspect/expect that most of us would agree with the 'diagnosis,' if we heard/saw the info about some of these guys.

11. (I was joking)
LPC(OP) + agenda(OP) ~= constrained delta Mod T of <= to Dominos.

Doesn't change the fact that nothing has happened in gitmo re: rule of law. When will we get one way or other besides "may." It is a festering boil.
