McCain on MTP this morning - His fuzzy math
"On Sept. 15 before the stock market crash, we (McCain/Palin) were ahead by 3 points"...John McCain

Well, I guess McCain is trying to grasp at straws, considering he got walloped on election day...

To be honest, I don't recall McCain leading in ANY national match-up poll at any time...And most key swing state polls favored Obama..

Also, Sept. 15 was right after the Republican convention, and at that time they were still feeling the effects of the post convention bounce...

And considering McCain lost 3 presidential debates, Palin lost the VP debate, (not even taking into consideration her other mistakes/gaffes/controversies that came out after her selection), it didn't take a stock market crash for him to lose...He would have gotten destroyed regardless.....

McCain should have just said the better person & the better candiate won....

2. That stupid move to put his campaign on hold as well as a truly stupid VP
candidate that revealed her shallowness more and more over time were what sealed his fate.

Not that he was going to win anyway. They had a brief bump when Palin was introduced and then
she did some unscripted speaking...oops. End of bump.

3. McCain was ahead
at the beginning of Sept very very briefly. IT didn't last and the spread toward Obama widened through Oct. Ahead for 2 days 2 months out doesn't count for much.

5. McCain got a predictable "bump" from the RNC and the Palin pick.
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 05:31 PM by Mayberry Machiavelli
It was the week after these two events that he led for the only time.

It's entirely analogous with the buzz generated by the Ferraro pick by Mondale, after which he led (2 points versus McCain's 3) right after the convention.

Neither event changed the trajectory of the race which resulted in the candidate making the gimmick pick getting whomped after having their brief flurry of attention and buzz.

I've actually followed enough politics at this point in my life that despite making me feel a bit uneasy, I never got too worried about that little lead McCain got after the RNC because I did view it as an entirely predictable RNC bump, with an extra sprinkling of Palin, and entirely analogous to the Mondale/Ferraro situation.

But yea, how lame of McCain to revisit that. He had a long list of shameful, embarrassing and gimmicky decisions, ad campaigns etc. in that campaign. He would have lost anyway but he could have preserved some rep as a true maverick and some dignity, but no. And he compounds his ignominy even more by whining after the fact.

He might as well go out on MTP and shout "ACOOOORRRRRN!"

7. McCain confessed early on to being ignorant on economic matters.
The economy crashed, and the Mavericks were history.

9. poor bitter old man
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 06:52 PM by ErinBerin84
His convention bounce had already worn off when it crashed, plus Palin's Gibson "In what respect, Charlie?" interview was the previous Friday. Plus, why do Republicans always act like this is a badge of honor? It's like "Oh, people almost voted for us before they were reminded of the issues."
