(Des Moines Register) Grassley's still unsure why he opposed Sotomayor in '98
Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley said today he still cannot recall why he opposed Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation to a federal appeals court judgeship 11 years ago, after searching the congressional record for answers.
Grassley was among three Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee and 29 Republican members in the Senate to vote against her 1998 confirmation.
Grassley said last week he could not recall why he opposed her and that he would have to search the record for his statements at the time.
"But we've looked in the record of the committee and the congressional record and there's no statement by me," Grassley said today. "So, I don't know why."
When pressed, Grassley replied that he was very curious about his reason for opposing Sotomayor, a federal district court judge who was confirmed to the 2nd District Court of Appeals despite Grassley's opposition.
"I want to know why myself," Grassley said. "I probably want to know why more than (reporters) want to know why."
