No apologies here! Pres. Obama today: Sotomayor critics twisting her words/"their efforts will fail"
Edited on Sat May-30-09 11:35 AM by ClarkUSA
WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama pushed back on Saturday at conservative critics of his Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, accusing them of twisting her words to score political points.

"There are, of course, some in Washington who are attempting to draw old battle lines and playing the usual political games, pulling a few comments out of context to paint a distorted picture of Judge Sotomayor's record," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

"But I am confident that these efforts will fail... Her achievements are all the more impressive when you consider what she had to overcome in order to achieve them," Obama said... With Obama's Democrats commanding a 59-seat majority in the 100-member Senate, Republicans are unlikely to gather the necessary votes to block her nomination.

Hmm... the usual rabble-rousing House Republican leadership have been awfully quiet these days. Whatever happened to Eric Cantor previously omnipresent 24/7 "Party of NO" MSM appearances?

2. I like how he takes Republican critics head-on in a way that is reasonable but tough, not divisive.

16. The GOP's fanatical, jaw-dropping racism, sealed my full commitment to this nomination.
Yes, I strongly believe that we need more liberal judges. I believe this because I believe that more liberal judges more accurately interpret the law and the constitution.

But having said that, the insane rancor coming from the GOP only solidifies my support for getting this done.

22. Same here, P.H. Same here - the more they catastrophize the more I support...
Sotomayer, even if she's not as liberal as I'd like.

3. I'm glad he's speaking out about this. They will fail! They are
a nasty bunch of racist pricks.

4. Wow. How deeply racist they are was on full technicolor display this week as never before.

The comments from Liddy, Gingrich, Limbaugh, and Tancredo were like something out of The Onion. I'd love to see polling that measured the drop in Hispanic support for the GOP during the past week. I bet horrific internal poll results were the reason we heard belated disapproval from Senator Cornyn (who's responsible for 2010 Senate races), Karl Rove and Michael "Emphathize Right On Your Behind" Steele yesterday. :D

5. They went absolutely crazy this week! How any minority can
align itself with that party is beyond me. We have our racists, but they keep it a little more undercover. The GOP makes no secret of it.

Steele...uuugh

"slammin and rammin".....:wtf:

Once again, he sounds like a damned fool!

6. Hispanic conservatives have to be rationalizing like crazy after this past week.

As for Steele, what you said. I hope he's RNC chairman forever.

14. Racist AND Sexist
I know Liddy's beyond whatever pale the right wing has, but the comment about hoping the court doesn't have to convene while she's menstruating was horrific added to horrific. I swear, they're trying to take this country down, and only the conviction that we are strong enough to keep them from doing it gives me any hope at all.

18. Definitely. Liddy's comments were so radioactive that the MSM almost ignored them.
I wish they had been put on a 24/7 loop but given the proud focus Spanish-language shows have given this nomination and his comments along with Tancredo, Gingrich, etc., millions of young Hispanic women will no doubt be loyal Democratic for the rest of their lives. Republicans will not "take this country down" because they lack the demographic support from Hispanics to do so. Now more so than ever. With President Obama at the helm, we can dare to HOPE again. :hi:

15. The best part? Seeing President Obama totally neuter the GOP message machine just by being himself.
Edited on Sat May-30-09 06:24 PM by ClarkUSA
He has made ineffective what we have feared for so long: the GOP attack machine. It'll never be the same for Steele and Co. Karl Rove looked like a shaky old man on Faux News counselling tolerance and courtesy. :wtf:

The Republican leadership must be demoralized. I mean, have you heard from Eric Cantor lately? His smug weaselly "Party of NO" face used to be a ubiquitous sight on cable TV. And what's Boehner doing these days besides working on his tan? It's going to be an awesome next 7.5 years. :woohoo:

perk we got with Obama.. and didn't we just see the previews all during the primaries and general?

It's been like freaking David going up against the Goliath corporatemedia conglomerates aka/the republicon base.

That's what I was thinking while I was writing my previous reply. Our guy is way too cool a cat for any and all attack machines. That much has been proven time and again, much to the enduring dismay of his opponents and critics. ;)

I know. A friend of mine said to me tonight that one day people will ask us, "What was it like to live through this moment in history? What was it like to listen to Obama's speeches live? Were Republicans and his primary opponents trying hard to stop him? How was it when he helped reverse global warming and started to finally wean America off fossil fuels?" And boy, what a story each of us will be able to tell. It was all worth it. :)

23. The Sotomayor Choice. Delicious in so many ways...
First, Bush chose her first--excellent political cover.

Second, she's bringing out the worst in the worst of the right.

OMG, the Liddy statement, and Tancredo, et al...
