CBS on their golf analyst's comments re Pelosi: "An unacceptable attempt at humor".
Edited on Sun May-10-09 03:07 PM by Jackeens
CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty came under sharp criticism Saturday for a joke he wrote in a Dallas magazine article that suggested American soldiers would be just as likely to knock off House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Harry Reid as they would Osama bin Laden.

Feherty was among five Dallas residents who wrote for "D Magazine" on former President George W. Bush moving to Dallas, where the former Ryder Cup player from Northern Ireland has been living the last dozen years.

"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this though," Feherty wrote toward the end of his column. "Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

Feherty is among the most popular golf analysts on television for his glib humor. He writes a monthly column for Golf Magazine, and the last of the four books he has written was titled, "An Idiot for All Seasons."

CBS Sports quickly distanced itself from Feherty's writing. "We want to be clear that this column for a Dallas magazine is an unacceptable attempt at humor and is not in any way condoned, endorsed or approved by CBS Sports," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said.

"David Feherty is an insightful and sometimes humorous commentator for CBS Sports' golf coverage," the PGA Tour said in a statement. "However, his attempt at humor in this instance went over the line, and his comments were clearly inappropriate. We hope he will use better judgment in the future."

1. If they didn't fire him, they did not respond adequately.
With Pelosi third in line for the Presidency, you'd think he'd be hearing from the Secret Service..

HEY AGENT MIKE!!!

3. I bet he'd get fired if he smoked pot, like Michael Phelps.
Threatening government officials is apparently less of a crime.

2. That isn't good enough.
That simple minded asshole should not have a job anymore. He should probably be in jail or at least under investigation by the Secret Service.

Except his remarks reflect the thoughts of probably 99.99% of the touring pros in the PGA.

There is probably no group of "athletes" more anti-government and anti tax than these spoiled sheltered children.

Wanda jokes about wanting kidney failure from a former prescription drug abuser who told us all he wanted President Obama to fail and that is all over the news as a terrible outrage?

8. Nothing Funnier than
assassination of a public figure you disagree with...huh?

If he would have said it at a party he might be able to claim drunkenness but this was written and edited....what a buffoon.

10. Given continued attention to Pelosi re torture briefings in 2002, Senate Chair Graham & Vice Shelby
should have received every briefing Pelosi received as well as other members of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

11. CBS Sports needs to look up the definition of 'unacceptable'
because if he's still working for their organization, then what he said clearly WAS acceptable to them!

I'm as understanding as the next person when it comes to making mistakes, but is this organization so hard-pressed for on-air talent that they continue to allow this bloviating sack of shit to pollute the public airwaves with this shit? How many times can he pull his six pounds of foreskin down to his neck and fling chunks of smegma into polite society?

Non-apology NOT accepted!

Is this guy a citizen or is he an illegal alien? Being from Northern Ireland means he could be a terrorist, too.

14. Feherty issued a lame apology on Sunday but not everyone is looking away
Edited on Mon May-11-09 12:39 AM by Awsi Dooger
Here's a very good article by Ron Sirak of Golf Digest. I recommend reading the entire piece but I'll paste the comments that struck me. They are exactly as I summarized on a few golf sites, that Feherty was hiding behind his own political views and passing them off as military cover:

http://www.golfdigest.com/golfworld/columnists/2009/05/golf_feherty_sirak_0510

"In trying to gain as much information on this matter as possible in order to develop the most measured response possible I scoured the Internet all weekend. I came across this comment posted on one website:

"Wow, as a soldier ... this just blows my mind. A soldier would never speak this way about members of congress, at least to a media man. It's actually covered by the Uniform Code Of Military Justice. Disrespecting members of congress is a punishable offense. Obviously, most of my buddies lean to the right ... but they're not insane. I can't believe that guy ... "

I found that extremely troubling. It made me doubt whether any American serviceman or servicewoman said anything to Feherty anywhere near like what he wrote. My fear is he was expressing his political feelings and hiding behind those brave enough to wear the uniforms of this nation by putting words in their mouths. That possibility is just as disturbing as the lame joke itself."

***

BTW, I was suspended for two weeks from a major golf website, simply for posting a thread on this topic on Friday. Those sites are incredibly right wing. Feherty is a favorite, and that will only surge after this episode. Apparently it was fine for other posters at that site to attack me via PM. Best they could do was "moron."
