I think Detroit would be a good choice for the 2012 Democratic National Convention
It would send a strong message about this Administration's commitment to help the auto industry through these hard times, and give a big jolt of economic activity to a city that badly needs it. In addition, all the hotel workers in Detroit are unionized, which is always a high priority for Democratic conventions.

2. Detroit did a great job when they hosted the Super Bowl a few
years ago. They would do another great job with the 2012 Democratic Convention. What a way to tell that struggling city, "America is behind you and we're here to help bring your city back!"

3. We maybe should do Texas
Keep the secessionist in line, rub Republican noses in an "America's Team" theme, and help turn it blue.

8. Not a bad idea
Downtown Dallas has seen a renaissance in new development, and the (kinda) new American Airlines Center would be a great venue.

And the city-funded convention center hotel was just given the thumbs up in today's elections...

6. I think Phoenix should be considered because I think Obama
can win Arizona in 2012....If it wasn't McCain last year as the Republican nominee, he likely would won AZ. in 08..

7. The Repubs met there in 1980
And nominated Reagan, who then went through us like shit through a goose. So it worked out very well for them, 'cause I don't quite remember another ass-whipping like that one.
John
Except for the one he put on us in 1984, too.

13. Nope -- I mentioned 1984
I remember it because I still have a deep bruise on my butt the size and shape of Ronnie's size-14 brogan.
John
Good thing the Tigers won the World Series that year or it would've gone into the books as my personal annus horribilis. As it was, I just tuned into the local news at 20 past the hour for sports highlights and, um, ignored the rest of the events.

Or I would have seriously thought of slitting my wrists.

I want so bad to just do the same with the Republicans, but in this day and age, you're not going to see that type of beat down by either party. California seems unlikely to go Republican in our lifetime, but by the same token, the interior west is still very heavily Republican (Utah, Idaho and Wyoming), so I don't see the Democrats winning there. It appeared they might be making up some ground in the south in 1992 and 1996, but that ended in 2000 and 2004. Though Obama has done well in the New South, it won't help him much in places like Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

I think the most realistic electoral blowout for the Democrats include every state Obama won in 2008, plus Arizona, Missouri, Montana, North & South Dakota, Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana, West Virginia and West Virginia, which would put their electoral number under 500 -- still below Reagan's totals in 1980 and 1984.

For Republicans, it would include every state Bush won in 2004, plus Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, which puts them around what Obama did in 2008. So I don't see the Republicans having the type of blowout possible for the Democrats in the future, which explains why their last two 'won' elections have been two of the closest in history and the Dems last three victories have all been blowouts.

12. I' ve Been Reading About Detroit's Revival
The convention there would be a way to show the world the new bottom's up approach to development that Detroit's taking. Artists, urban farming and whatnot. It would be an opportunity to also show real estate for practically the taking that could spur even more relocation and development in neglected areas. It's not as if there will be a hint of a contested primary, and we all know who's going to be the nominee, so millions will tune out unless something piques their interest-like how Detroit is doing.

Not to mention that Detroit is probably cheaper than a lot of other venues and definitely could use the business.
