EMBRACE CHANGE! This is the most significant picture for me because . . .
. . .it is probably one of the first times a bunch of Black folk just went over to White House to hangout, watch the game and did the things that we do when we get together. Now for the record we, regardless of race or ethnic group, do essentially the same things when we get together and this wasn't an exclusively Black event, but as a Black man it is the picture that choked me up the most.

President Barack Obama holds 3-D glasses while watching the Super Bowl game at a Super Bowl Party in the family theater of the White House. Guests included family, friends, staff members and bipartisan members of Congress, 2/1/09.

5. I am not sure if you are person of color but for many people of color we do notice color. . .
. . .especially when it is people of color doing things that we have never seen before. We don't take the symbolism for granted. My mom tells me about what it was like when she was a kid and a Black person was on TV, she said everyone in the house would stop what they were doing and run to the TV and sit in silence as they watched.

6. For me, too, not just because I'm black, but because it is a tradition for my entire
family--all 5 generations--to get together on Super Bowl Sunday, order some chicken wings, fries, pizza, eat and drink while the younger kids pay board games. We have so much fun, some of us too much getting drunk and whatnot, yelling at the screen, talking shit about our favorite team, etc.

That's what family is all about! ;)

12. And after 400 years of the BS African Americans have endured, we'll indulge you in your moment....
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 01:55 PM by Clio the Leo
.... and let me take this opportunity to say, that as a white person, one of the things I've been so happy about is that, not once (and there are LOTS of African Americans in my family and social circle, I'd dare say more blacks than whites) have I heard anyone try to claim this moment as ONLY something to be enjoyed by black Americans. It would be all too easy to say, "y'all had the last four centuries, now this is OUR time to celebrate.." but no. Not even a hint of that. Things aren't perfect and we have much more work to do .... but for a brief moment last fall ..... the nation went color blind.

I think that speaks a bit to the attitude of the man we elected but still ..... thank you. My favorite line from his DNC acceptance speech was also my favorite line from Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech .... "We cannot walk alone...."

It WAS a long time comin' but I'm glad I lived to see this moment and I thank all of those who got us here who didn't.
