Chavez's gift to Obama

From the pool report: "I have a lot to learn and I'm very much looking forward to listening," POTUS says. He is seated at the head of a U-shaped table, with the leader of Chile to his right and Chavez all the way to his left, at the far end of the U.

When the pool entered the room Chavez was busy talking to other leaders. Then Obama spoke, and as the pool was being ushered out Chavez walked over to him. Obama stood up and Chavez handed him the book The book is: Las Venas Abiertas de America Latina (The Open Veins of Latin America), By Eduardo Galeano. A helpful Chilean delegate who did not want to be named described it as an academic book that is the basis for the 60s-era "dependency theory" that Latin America depends on the north.

The full book title in English is "The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent." It's a politically influential text in Latin America, published in 1971, about the history of the region's reliance on nations such as the United States.

Now the President for life has Obama as his willing slave.

You read it here first Fox News. I'd run with the story if I were you.

7. Looks like ole' Hugo came with a plan to make best buddies with the Pres.
Obama is liked worldwide.. don't want to get on his bad side; especially when the Americas could actually be opened. Would be nice if the southern hemisphere was respected and cared for as much as the northern hem. There is much we could offer each other on this continent. However, when we dictate and bully the way we have, you have a lopsided Americas.

It definately rocked my world when I read it. Highly recommended. It will help Obama understand where the left is coming from in Latin America since they all read it in their formative years.

34. I remember the left in Latin America using this book
as an organizing tool. They would stage public readings and read it on the buses. Motorcycle Diaries was much less important, imo, but that is kind of the Open Veins for the younger generation.

Reaquired reading for any 21st century leader.

Were it not for Obama's books, he would not have given his.

Pure icing on the cake.

Ahhh! That's the change we need. Whip cream on the pie.

49. what "state controlled media"? if you're talking about the decision not to renew
the license of RCTV because it openly advocated the overthrow of the government, educate yourself. I'm not going to waste my time here as I have little doubt it is more convenient for you to remain ignorant and simply accept the blathering of such noble sources as FOX "news" and other propagandists.

50. I've never even had foxnews
I do constantly read NPR, BBC and other international outfits. Great job on equating me to a right-winger when I've already state that my problem lies not with his social reforms (hey we agree here) but rather his continual self promotion and restrictions on the press.

51. again, educate yourself about his "restrictions on the press"
he let RCTV go far longer than I would suspect someone in the U.S. would if, say, FOX was constantly and openly calling on the people to pick up arms and openly overthrow the govt (which they are coming close to doing). But I guess openly calling for the overthrow of the president on the public airwaves should be allowed. By the way, RCTV continued in a private venue. They were just denied access to the public airwaves. Google is your friend.

Huge loves our President. i loved his "i want to be your friend" and Obama's reaction was just very kind.

i really do hope they work together to improve the lives of people.

and most americans don't give a shit that Chavez said something bad about Bush. stupid media whores trying to make Chavez out to be some bad guy or enemy just because of that. most americans would probably agree.
