Democracies must protect themselves when groups begin to call for violence and use hatred for political ends that are clearly not democratic or just and aimed specifically at liberals.

3. That's why I specifically characterize myself as such
Well, that and the fact that I AM pretty much a liberal by definition. It's a fine word, and people have been cowed into running from it. It doesn't mean lazy tax-and-spend quasi-socialism, it means thoughtful continual adjustment to accommodate the realities of life and benefit everyone. It's based in a healthy bit of humility of not having all the answers, and a cosmopolitan attitude toward coexisting with others who have different views.

I view those who run from the label as having been suckered and being too worried about what others think of them, and this includes many who use the term "progressive".

Rub their noses in it. Remind them that they just had an almost 30 year experiment where they and their ideas dominated virtually everything, and it FAILED. It failed for precisely the same reason Communism failed: they're both based on the idiotic assumption of the perfectibility of mankind. Liberalism accommodates the human creature for what it IS, which is basically the same cave-person it's always been.

Communism says that when the evil overlords of capitalism are taken away and everyone's completely safe and taken care of, people will suddenly be less lazy and get off of their couches and pitch in. Reactionary Republicanism says that when the safety net is taken away, people will get off their couches and suddenly take responsibility for their actions and amass their own piles. Both fail because human beings are a mixed bag. They make mistakes, so even if everyone DOES knuckle under in the Ayn Randian Dystopia, failures will occur among the good, too. The human creature simply isn't noble enough to voluntarily pitch in as Marx would have us believe, and the impetus of ambition is a very good motivator, which gets stifled under Communism.

If you subscribe to liberal beliefs, proudly wear the label. It's also fun to watch reactionaries with no rejoinder when they tar you with their worst insult and you inform them that it's a virtue.

6. theyve done this as far back as i can recall,
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 11:56 AM by iamthebandfanman
did you just now catch onto this ?

liberal was made a dirty word a while back...

just like socialism got a bad rap because the nazi's used the word socialist in their party name(even tho they were fascists who ran on worker sentiment to gain control)...

if i had a dollar for everytime i heard a conservative label nazis as communist, i would seriously be a rich man.

they have no understanding or comprehension of the words that they slander whatsoever.

the GOP isnt the cancer, just part of the illness... conservatism itself is the cancer... as it has done nothing but bread hatred, fear, anger, and resentment. you add to that its acceptance for false information and the celebration of ignorance(because hey, idiots are easier to manipulate.. why educate them?)... and you are ripe for take over by a radical group of people( in this case, those with fascist/authoritarian ideals)...

hasnt anybody stopped to wonder where all those fascists went after WW2? do people think they just disappeared into the nothing ? heck no, they spread out. into every country. laying the roots of their return.

the scourge of fascism will never be destroyed as long as conservatives insist on protecting it.

10. Liberalism is not bad, but extremism on either side is bad.
But I couldn't agree more than the GOP is a cancer on America and the world. They are nothing more than hatemongers, and more often than not, ignorant hatemongers.
