Well, that and the fact that I AM pretty much a liberal by definition. It's a fine word, and people have been cowed into running from it. It doesn't mean lazy tax-and-spend quasi-socialism, it means thoughtful continual adjustment to accommodate the realities of life and benefit everyone. It's based in a healthy bit of humility of not having all the answers, and a cosmopolitan attitude toward coexisting with others who have different views.
I view those who run from the label as having been suckered and being too worried about what others think of them, and this includes many who use the term "progressive".
Rub their noses in it. Remind them that they just had an almost 30 year experiment where they and their ideas dominated virtually everything, and it FAILED. It failed for precisely the same reason Communism failed: they're both based on the idiotic assumption of the perfectibility of mankind. Liberalism accommodates the human creature for what it IS, which is basically the same cave-person it's always been.
Communism says that when the evil overlords of capitalism are taken away and everyone's completely safe and taken care of, people will suddenly be less lazy and get off of their couches and pitch in. Reactionary Republicanism says that when the safety net is taken away, people will get off their couches and suddenly take responsibility for their actions and amass their own piles. Both fail because human beings are a mixed bag. They make mistakes, so even if everyone DOES knuckle under in the Ayn Randian Dystopia, failures will occur among the good, too. The human creature simply isn't noble enough to voluntarily pitch in as Marx would have us believe, and the impetus of ambition is a very good motivator, which gets stifled under Communism.
If you subscribe to liberal beliefs, proudly wear the label. It's also fun to watch reactionaries with no rejoinder when they tar you with their worst insult and you inform them that it's a virtue.
