Release on Geithner, Bernanke AIG Hearing

For Immediate Release:

March 18, 2009

House Financial Services Committee to Hear from Secretary Geithner and Chairman Bernanke on AIG

Washington, DC - House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) today announced the committee will hold a second hearing to more thoroughly examine the oversight of the federal government's intervention at the American International Group (AIG).

"The Capital Markets Subcommittee has led the efforts to examine the government's intervention at AIG," said Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises. "Because the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve were unable to testify at our first Capital Markets hearing this week, I have worked with Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) to convene a second hearing on AIG next week. I am pleased that on Tuesday afternoon, Treasury Secretary Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke will have the opportunity to explain directly and publicly the actions they have taken to rescue AIG from collapse and monitor the company's performance since then. They have much to clarify for the American public. I look forward to their appearances."

WHO: House Financial Services Committee

WHAT: "Oversight of the Federal Government's Intervention at American International Group"

WHEN: Tuesday, March 24, 2009

2:00 p.m.

WHERE: 2128 Rayburn House Office Building

1. Quit hogging that popcorn!
I really want to hear what Bernanke has to say, Geithner is a no brainer. Lots of wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes for sure.

Me thinks both of them knew all about this mess.

Can't wait for some details so I can be even more outraged than I was today.

Outrage with no hope of any justice being dispensed to any of these corps or any political individuals involved in the corruption.

3. Good ... I'll be watching
I've tried to give Geithner the benefit of the doubt -- I trust
Obama and if he thinks this is the man for the job, so be it --
but I'm starting to get a bit concerned. I'm hoping Geithner
can explain the chronology and the extent of his involvement in
this whole mess. Obama has been spending political capital
supporting Geithner and I'm hoping those efforts will end up
being worth it.
