The only people who can really limit free speech here are the mods and the admins.

Anyway, if you post an inflammatory topic, use questionable sources, or otherwise anger a significant portion of the community, you shouldn't be very surprised when that portion of the community tells you how they feel. Sometimes with lots of expletives, because this is the internet, and people feel all tough and big and can curse each other out and call names. Cries of 'censorship' really annoy me. I mean, come on, really? Some guy on the internet told you to shut up, and so you're being oppressed?

This is the internet, where people wield opinions like battle axes and smash each other over the head with them. It's mean, ugly, and more often than not, a little stupid. DU is a part of the internet, and subject to the same kinds of ugliness, stupidity, petty meanness, and attention seeking you'd find on any other message board.

Maybe we have less of it here, but it's still there. But let's not kid ourselves, either. The struggle for the Future of America isn't being fought here. This is a message board on the internet. It leads to activism, is a gathering point for activists, and a good tool for passing along information in order to organize and motivate activists. But posting a thread in GD:P isn't going to save the world. Your snarky bon mot isn't going to single-handedly destroy the GOP.

Ultimately, we are just a group of people locked in a nonexistent room, screaming nonsense at each other that nobody really cares about for no other reason than that we're enjoying it. Otherwise, we'd be doing something else.

And I, for one, love it.
