(Biden communications director and former Time bureau chief Jay) Carney said he wasn't swept up by Obamamania during the campaign, but that he has long respected the president and his new boss, Joe Biden.

Asked how he tries to keep Biden from making a costly gaffe, Carney said that "most of what people attribute to him as being gaffes are really examples of his candor."

"Vice President Biden is not capable of not telling you how he feels," he said.
