Chuck Todd just said Obama has NOT made his position known on Prop 8....
Contessa Brewer just asked him if Obama has weighed in on the debate about Prop 8 (due to what's happening today in CA) and Todd said no, but he is for civil unions but against gay marriage, and maybe that's a question that should be asked of Gibbs now in the press briefing. :eyes: Obama SAID he's against Prop 8!

2. He has said that
but has he taken a position on this case? I am guessing that is what Brewer meant.

5. He said he's against Prop 8 and Chuck didn't acknowledge that. As a matter of fact, he
almost IMPLIED he's FOR Prop 8 since he said Obama's against gay marriage.

4. I think Obama needs to be clearer on this issue. Prop 8 supporters used his words to further their
own agenda.

He has said that he is against gay marriage but also against Prop 8. I believe his reasoning was that it was not necessary. I think he needs to elaborate.

Joe Biden did the same.

11. Being against Prop 8 before the election may be a different thing...

than being against it now, once people have voted. If Obama is ambivalent about the issue then perhaps he should stay out of it since this is really a California judicial issue at the moment.

Obama sent letter supporting No on Prop 8 and it was never used!!!!
This from Andrew Sullivan's blog:

We discover they actually chose not to use a letter from Obama that said, among other things:

I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states ... Finally, I want to congratulate all of you who have shown your love for each other by getting married these last few weeks.

Every time you feel exasperated by the uselessness of much of the gay political establishment, you realize you are not exasperated enough. (This is Sullivan's comment not mine)

6. I'm not sure that it's even relevant
It's a state matter. Obama is not a state official. He has a lot on his plate right now.

As usual these asswipes are just trying to stir the shit.

14. I am sure this campaign statement
is relevant to most gays and lesbians. My best (gay) friend and I volunteered for Obama's campaign. We encouraged everyone we came in contact with to vote for Obama. He promised to end the divisions in this country, saying everyone is important and equal - young/old, white/black, old/young, GAY/STRAIGHT.
Now, I know President Obama said he is not for same-sex marriage (although I think that was the politically expedient thing to do, not something he actually believes - ditto Hillary Clinton), but he also said he was against Prop 8. I really think he should address the issue. Obviously, he has a lot on his plate right now, but millions of gay people supported him, and he should say SOMETHING about it. President Obama is simply too smart to think discrimination is OK.

15. I hope all of you who posted on this thread have taken the time to
write an email to Chuck Todd and tell him to do his homework, and tell him NOT to misrepresent the President any longer!!!!!!!!!

I just did it, you all can do the same.

I'm sick of people complaining about shoddy news and not doing something to make these people accountable.

Now that you have all complained, roll up your sleeves and get to work. As Obama said, it's not going to be easy.

27. As far as I know, Obama's official position is complicated, and tell me if I'm wrong:
Edited on Sat Mar-07-09 07:51 PM by Aloha Spirit
For now, the federal government should ensure equal rights without using the word marriage.
The federal government should not legislate inequality based on sexual orientation, nor should the federal government discriminate by sexual orientation when it comes to it's treatment of federal employees.
States should have a say in what defines a marriage for now or a civil union and some other stuff, but shouldn't be able to limit rights, states should only be able to broaden them.
