Jindal's Volcano Remark Upsets Mayor
Jindal's volcano remark upsets mayor
Published: Feb. 26, 2009 at 10:40 AM

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal stands by his swipe at federal spending to monitor volcanoes but a mayor in the path of a volcano is fuming, officials say.

In delivering the Republican response to U.S. President Barack Obama's speech this week, Jindal, a rising GOP star, questioned why "something called 'volcano monitoring'" was included in the massive economical stimulus bill.

His question promptly rankled the mayor of one city in the shadow of Mount St. Helens, CNN reported.

"Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?" Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Wash., said to CNN. "We have one that's very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently."

1. And Vancouver, WA is a conservative area. That volcano remark especially impacts
more rural, mountainous areas in WA, AK, and CA, which are predominantly Republican. I wonder what Palin thinks of his remark?

5. They'd rather die in the pyroclastic flow
than utter a word in protest over their spokestwerp.

2. Why Do We Need To Monitor Volcanoes???
Everyone knows the best way to appease a volcano is to toss a virgin in it. And w/ the stunning success of abstincence only education, there's LOTS of virgins around these days.

4. If I understand correctly
Seattle has signs with Volcano evacuation routes, and a general bit of lore that says you should attempt to get at least fifty feet above valley level on stable ground in the case of a massive pyroclastic flow.

Jindal is an idiot. Why is he a republican? Creeps me out when new-generation Americans cleave to the party of racism and bigotry.

6. Yes, an eruption from Mt. Rainier would devastate the greater Seattle/Tacoma area.
There are lahar warning systems set up in the cities that are nearest the mountain. Even a mudflow could be disastrous for some communities.

8. lahars - thats what it was
thanks for the correction :)

The last time I was in Seattle (couple years ago) it was three solid days of dense fog. I got to see the side of the building I was walking next to as long as I stayed within arms length of it, and drank WAY too much coffee.

:P

11. Pyroclastic flows? No.
Although lahars could take out portions of outlying Seattle suburbs in the SE.

9. It's Palin all over again
What person with sense doesn't know that there are areas of this country susceptible to volcanic activity? Most people learned about these volcanoes in K-12 education.

It is $230 million dollars. He just used the volcano line to set up the next line in his speech.

15. He pretty well alienated the entire Pacific Rim with that comment.
I posted Mark Begich's response last night http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/02/alaska-sen-mark-begich-responds-to-gov.html , and even Republican Lisa Murkowski has taken him to task.

“It is absolutely appropriate for our federal government to spend money on volcano monitoring. A current example is Mount Redoubt. This active volcano, which is on the flight path into Anchorage International Airport, the third busiest cargo airport in the world, and Elmendorf Air Force Base, has been smoldering since the end of January. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has been on 24 hour watch since then.

"A volcanic eruption at Mount Redoubt has the potential to bring down a jumbo aircraft flying over Southcentral Alaska. Alaskans vividly remember that volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Redoubt nearly brought down a KLM Boeing 747 as it was completing its flight from Amsterdam to Anchorage in December 1989. The volcanic ash caused the failure of all four engines on the jumbo jet."

On another note, Alaska's lone congressman, Don Young, was one of only 16 Republicans who voted for Obama's $410 billion appropriations bill yesterday. Alaska seems to be turning downright purple -- now if we can just do something about Sarah.
