In a bizarre moment from Bobby Jindal's speech last night, the Louisiana governor dumped on President Obama for funding "something called 'volcanic monitoring.'" Top geologists tell the Daily Beast that the governor needs to do his homework.

The country is facing two wars, an unprecedented economic crisis, and global environmental hazards, but Bobby Jindal last night decided to call attention to one of the stranger problems one could think of: overprotecting Americans from volcanoes.

In his response to President Obama's address, Jindal said he opposed the stimulus package's inclusion of “$140 million for something called 'volcano monitoring.'”

“Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, D.C,” Jindal said.

I actually think the title vampire slayer, in some contexts, is a good term. That may sound odd, but its accurate in one interpretation of vampires, and the most accurate one. (other one requires a big flip)

So how or why is Bobby Jindal a vampire slayer. Could you expand on that?

a laundry list of programs which, on the face, sound wasteful, but on further examination, prove to be part and parcel of what we have come to enjoy as citizens of this country.
My girlfriend has taken after me and now laughs and occasionally yells at conservative dipshits on TV. Vindal calling out volcanic monitoring struck her as particularly ludicrous. " I don't seem to recall any volcanic activity in Louisiana, but I bet that bony-assed Mr. Rogers wannabe would change his tune if he lived a stone's throw from an active volcano like we do."

He's a fucking idiot. His speech was like a wet, flaccid handshake. Conservative columnist David Brooks, commenting on Vindal's rebuttal speech during the PBS Newshour, called it (his words) "a disaster for the Republican Party."

If this is who the Repugs want to run in 2012, let 'em.
