Poll question: WHY GOP GOING ALL OUT TO DESTROY PRESIDENT OBAMA?
There has to be more than one....on the surface its a rejection of the STIM-PLAN through partisan sniping and whining plus a renovating of their message laced with code words.....

But there are other unspoken reasons

gimme your feedback plz....

Mahalo Nui,

Opi

4. It is necessary for politicians to convince us we're a divided country
That's their job.

Both parties are always prepared to give a voiceover to our dissent. In that way it appears we are not united in our 'concerns,' yet still somehow those concerns are being valiantly 'represented.'

It's all bullshit really.

they can keep doing the bidding of their corporate sponsors. They know that if we all realized and fought for something together they'd be screwed. So they keep trying to pit the poor against the middle class so that the rich can keep getting richer.

Yes, there was a right wing conspiracy, and they weren't very secretive about it. They wanted to hurt the Clintons. They wanted blood.

It could be the radical blow hards on the radio. Personally, I think that kind of venom on the air waves should be considered profanity. In the 1960s, people who spouted that kind of hatred were arrested for "inciting to riot" or something like that.

28. let me tell you a story
One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.
The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn't see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.

Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

"Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called the scorpion across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?"

"Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly.

"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!"

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"

"This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"

"Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog.

"Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

33. no mystery
The Republicans represent the wealthy and powerful few. Always have, and they never vary from that.

The are not going all out to destroy Obama, and do not care about any of the issues. They are doing the same thing they have always done. They are relentless and they are effective. They can't be persuaded or converted or anything else.

I don't understand why we are always casting around for theories to explain what the Republicans are doing and why. How could it be more clear? Whatever helps the wealthiest and most powerful few, they do. That is so predictable and reliable and obvious.

Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 01:26 PM by Two Americas
Who lost power? The same people are in power. When Democrats are in office it is at best an opportunity to change that.

If what you are suggesting were true - that merely electing Democrats meant that power had changed hands - there would be no reason for most people to vote Democratic. Whatever changes happen merely because Dems are in office only helps the gentrified few. There is nothing of benefit in that for most people.

43. this is why all this bs about how obama didn't achieve bipartisanship is crap
The republicans went into this with obstruction in mind. They had no intention of working with anyone from the start. I am convinced of that. So when Obama went over to talk to them they acted like it would have an affect. Obama made the dems take stuff out of the bill and everything... and the republicans still voted against it. They had no intention of voting for anything, no matter what they said before the vote. I think they thought it would make obama look like a fool. But from where I am standing, the republicans look like insolent children. The media is helping the republicans spin it to their benefit, but I think the american people, the ones who are struggling to keep their heads above water while the politicians are playing games can see right through it. At least I hope that is the case.

without the talk radio monopoly to enable it modern republicans would be a minor voice lost in a functioning democracy somewhat compromised by corporate monopoly money, instead of a major player capable of bringing this country to its knees and murdering millions out of fear and stupidity.

50. They are doing what they did to Clinton--it is all about power
The difference between the Clinton era and this time, however, is that we have the internet (and some progressive reporters) so we are not limited to seeing the right-wing media propaganda. Also, Obama has a democratic congress.

I recall during the primaries Obama and his supporters attacking both Clintons for "failing" at passing healthcare reform when first in office. Now, perhaps he (and many here) have a better perspective of how hard it was for Clinton to get anything done. Obama had three votes no matter how hard he tried at bipartisanship. Had he a republican congress, he too would have failed to get the bill passed.

Republicans will spend the next few years attacking Obama. Most of the media will allow the republicans to frame the issue (for example: the meme is "he is not being bi-partisan" rather than the "republicans refuse to compromise.") This time, with the internet and a few progressive media outlets, with a democratic congress he has a better chance.

Obama also has the ast 16 years, where it has become evident, even to the most diehard, that the republicans have been playing games with us to rob the treasury and retain power.

Finally: the economy is so bad, that I believe Americans can see the disconnect between reality and republican's talking points.

51. Bill Clinton HAD A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS in 1992
He had 56 Senators and over 60% of the House. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/102nd_United_States_Congress#Party_summary
One advantage that Obama has is that he knows the Senate and how things get done there. Contrast how he worked on the Stimulus bill versus how they did healthcare. The Clintons essentially created a detailed bill - that every member of the Finance committee rejected. HRC and Ira Magaziner created the bill after initially secret meeting - where even who they consulted with was secret. They made no effort to pull in the leading people in Congress for their opinions or advise. The first couple of years of Clinton's Presidency were rocky. (He did get his sea legs - but the last two years were wasted by Monica)
