Am I the only one who thinks tonight was a breaking point
for the Guard story? Ms. Knox was a perfect witness for the Dems. She was plain spoken, smart, tough and to the point. She said the content of the memos was true (who now cares about typefaces?), that Bush's failing to take the physical was a big deal, and that his own colleagues resented him because he was essentially a spoiled brat.

She has shifted the issue from the documents authenticity to what they contain. She has handed the Dems a pot of gold. Now let's see how they spend it.

One other point: Rather said that CBS will continue to "aggressively" investigate what Bush did in the NG. The right wingers rattled Rather's cage and out came a lion. I expect they will focus on why Bush did not take the physical.

My best guess: he was doing drugs and feared he would be caught. If so, he would have been shipped to Vietnam and he knew it, or to prison.

9. From what I am seeing
of the looks on Rather's face every time he talks about bushyboy I think bush/rove and company have done something to get him totally P.O.'d. Rather has nothing to lose in taking this story wherever it leads and giving the world the truth about the bush scumbags. I say GO DAN--GIVE 'EM HEEL!!!!!:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

this story is who kept him from being changed to active duty, and who got him the honorable discharge.

4. I'm more pessimistic on this than most DUers. I thought she
did a great job, but was not "cross-examined." Any witness can be taken apart and I am sure that we will see many attempts of this over the next days and weeks.

I am hopeful that CBS really has a full set of evidence and that, while any one piece of it can be attacked, when you look at the full set the picture becomes clear that they have the goods.

20. But why would they be forgeries?!?
I've thought early on that there's something wrong with those memos. The fonts looked MS Word.

My theory was a preemptive strike by Rove to sully the story with bogus memos, in the hopes that it would throw the story for a loop.

Now, what would be golden is the original memos, that Knox typed, and the source of the forgeries found to be Rove.

23. The documents were not created with MS Word
That has been completely debunked. Check out the numerous threads on this subject.

If they are forgeries, they were forged on a vintage typewriter of the right era, and it's not going to be easy to prove them as forgeries.

The original talking points put out by the right-wing attack machine on this have been completely debunked. Stop repeating them here.

24. Knox says she didn't type them - but what Rather didn't ask her is
"Did Killian ever type his own?"

Her responses were very cagey - not calculated, but cagey - and I wonder what else CBS knows about the documents' origins.

She said at one point the memos looked more like part of a personal journal. As a former secretary I can attest a) people I worked for typed a number of their own documents and b) I could not know the content nor the extent of what they typed themselves.

38. No..
that isn't what she said ("the memos looked more like part of a personal journal").

She said that keeping personal memos is sort of like keeping a personal journal. She was just clarifying why Killian would have been writing CYA memos to himself. It was just a way for him to keep a record of what was going on, in case he ever came under scrutiny.

42. Forgeries because
As Mrs Knox herself speculated, someone wanted to get the information/content itself out and revamped the original memos in a way that they couldn't be traced and "forger" would not get in trouble. Info gets out - which is the goal.

10. Breaking point? Finally, someone in the mainstream media
does their journalistic JOB, as Michael Moore would say, and look at the outcry

All Rather did was ask questions about B*'s NG service WHICH SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN 2000

Pot of gold for the Dems?

Let CBS fight this battle; all Dems should just sit back and enjoy

12. I agree, it's not about the memos
It's all of the evidence together:

* The paycheck records that show his 5 month absence.

* The fact that no one that served in Alabama at the time he says he was there can remember him.

* The Harvard professor that said that Bush told him that he'd gotten preferential treatment to get into the ANG, as well as his basic laziness as a student.

I agree about the physical. He knew that he would be grounded because of drugs and/or alcohol, and he knew that meant he could get shipped out. Even the campaign that he worked on in Alabama says that he used to drag himself in around noon and brag about how much drinking he'd done the night before.

The cat's out of the bag. Silencing Mrs. Knox now won't help the smear machine.

The people I'm worried about are the anonymous sources of this and other stories - the ones who could be silenced preemptively. I agree that Rove and his machine would stop at nothing.

I have loooong suspected drug use is a factor in his NG days.

But I have also long suspected any document mentioning that has "disappeared."

21. Nothing would be greater than to ....
see Bush and Rove get shafted with this Natl Guard thing.

But realistically, I don't think people will trust an 86-year old secretary no matter how credible she seemed on 60 Minutes.

We need some rock solid evidence against Shrub, something that can't be refuted with claims that "the witness is partisan" or "the documents are fake."

Unfortunately, I don't think this story will get the kind of attention that will change votes. It will just generate lots of noise about Dan Rather and where he got these documents in the first place.

32. More Guard records being release by the White House
In a related development, White House press secretary Scott McClellan hinted that more documents regarding Bush's National Guard service may soon be released. Asked whether officials in the White House have seen unreleased documents, McClellan called that "a very real possibility." Other officials with knowledge of the situation said more documents had indeed been uncovered and would be released in the coming days.
