Daschle Knew of Tax Issues Over Car Use Last June
President Obama’s choice for health secretary, Tom Daschle, was aware as early as last June that he might have to pay back taxes for the use of a car and driver provided by a private equity firm, but did not inform the Obama transition team until weeks after Mr. Obama named him to the health secretary’s post, senior administration officials said Saturday.

As Senate Democrats rushed to save the nomination of Mr. Daschle, their former leader, the White House spent the day trying to explain how he survived its vetting process despite his failure to pay $128,000 in taxes.

The White House would not say when the president himself learned of the tax issue, but said Mr. Obama is standing by his nominee.

1. well I have had my own problems with the tax people.
You would think that the men would know the car and driver was just like income.

2. This does not look
good at all for the Senator. He was deceptive.
On the other hand, Pres. Obama probably needs to drop him rather than stand by him at this point.

3. I agree, I hope O is walking around right now kicking the bush's,
no pun intended, to see what kind of vermin jump out. This hopefully is his way of exposing the "business as usual crowd" in the beltway.

4. He needs to withdraw from consideration.
He's too chummy with the health insurance companies anyway.

5. So fuckin'what?! He thought he MIGHT have to say taxes. Big deal.
Is this really more important than getting a workhorse like Daschle who can fix the healthcare crisis in this country?

7. Disappointed
I'm disappointed in Tom. We need to hold these individuals accountable. I'm saddened that the administration is looking past these discretions and sticking with their cloice for public office. Why set a tone for change, and then operate as if this is the same old political system.

8. Extremely Disappointing
he's opened up the gate for a tsunami of swipes at all democrats - because that's what the republican's do best. Just this AM, who ever was the republican on This Week, took a nasty swipe at Tom (well deserved) - then included all dems.

Thanks Tom - just what we needed in week 2 of Obama's admin.
