Save Mass Transit funding- Call Your Rep.Tommorow To Support the Nadler Amendment
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:57 PM by liskddksil
The Nadler amendment to the stimulus, H.R. 1, which will allocate 3 billion more for mass transit capital projects, passed the rules committee and will be voted on by the full House tommorow afternoon. In addition, another amendement, by Rep. Flake (R) will attempt to remove all funding for Amtrak. Please call your congressperson tommorow and urge them to support the Nadler and oppose the Flake amendment. The passage of Nadler's amendment is not a sure thing, because it will be opposed by Republicans and some blue-dogs as well, so pressure on your member of Congress is urgent to ensure that mass transit infrastructure is a significant part of the overall bill. The two amendments and their time for floor debate are outlined below.
-------------------------------
Nadler (NY)/DeFazio (OR)/Ellison (MN)/McMahon (NY)/Lipinski (IL): Would increase transit capital funding by $3 billion. (10 minutes)

Flake (AZ): Would strike funding for Amtrak. (10 minutes)

2. When stimulus was mentioned as striking Amtrak, but had tax cuts, is it Flake or higher push?

3. Obama advisor Lawrence Summers pushed

to reduce House Transportation Chair Oberstar's proposal of around 15 billion for transit to the 10 billion that is in the bill right now, to make room for tax cuts. The Nadler amendment's passage, if the Flake amendment is shot down, will bring the amount to around 13 billion which while not perfect is certainly better.

Can we replace the Amtrak to other rail and include it?
