SAG Awards Fashion: The Michelle Obama Effect And More (SLIDESHOW)
It looked like Hollywood was still basking in the post-inauguration glow as two trends that Michelle Obama set last Tuesday were paraded down the red carpet of Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards. First was the one-shoulder dress, and the other was wintry white. Also, the black gowns that blanketed the Golden Globes were nowhere to be seen, while skin was still very much in.

Whose dress do you like best? Who did we leave out? Weigh in below.

The Michelle Obama Effect
The one-shoulder dress was everywhere. From left: Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Evan Rachel Wood, and Teri Hatcher

We weren't kidding. It was really everywhere. Here again on Lisa Edelstein ("House"), Laura Linney, and Angela Davis ("The Office")

The Michelle Obama Effect Cont.'d: Snow White
From left: Teri Hatcher, Amy Poehler, Anne Hathaway, and Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button")

Blue: It's the Post-Inaugural Purple
From left: Katrina Bowden ("30 Rock"), Nicolette Sheridan, Mindy Kaling ("The Office")

Powdery blue? Lavender? Whatever the color of Freida Pinto's gown, it was pretty.

Women Wearing Pants
It would seem there's a connection between mind-boggling talent and wearing pants to an awards show. We're talking about Kristin Scott Thomas (left) and Meryl Streep.

Skin Is (Still) In
Emily Blunt (left) glittered while Angelina Jolie was modest in the front, party in the back.

Black Was Not Back
The preferred color of the Golden Globes was seldom seen at the SAGs. From left: Kate Winslet, Jane Krakowski, Marisa Tomei, and Christina Applegate

A Public Service Announcement
Penelope Cruz should just fire her stylist, because, for a beautiful woman, she never really brings it on a red carpet. For example: this black velvet dress.

Just Good
Tina Fey looks natural--and, more importantly, comfortable--in minimal makeup and jewelry.

does it seem like no one was super-glamorous this year? i guess they don't want to do too much with the economy and all....

3. I adore Michelle but....
.... I've been selling one shoulder gowns in my store for over a year now. So that would be a trend she's following rather than starting.

Now, if everyone busts out in those groovy green gloves, THEN we'll have a story. (I may go get some myself!)

5. Actually, I started the trend toward colored gloves...
I wore green gloves last year. This year I said it was to be purple gloves, because I had acquired a beautiful purple scarf and I thought the combination of purple gloves and scarf with a black coat would be smashing. My daughter had to look high and low for some, finally finding a pair for me for xmas.

So i guess it was me...

8. I've been wearing green gloves for 10 years and get compliments on them all the time. Green
is really an all season color.

And there are a few shades that really look nice with just about every skin color.

4. I doubt that all these women chose their dresses in the last 6 days, or trashed
the dresses they originally chose in order to wear dresses like Michelle Obama wore. I find it much more likely that this particular dress style is now in fashion and Michelle choose a fashionable style, just like all the other women.

I'm re-editing to be nicer :)

I'm sure the article author has other topics they'd like to get assignments to write about, topics with far more depth to them.

But this comes across as something they pulled out of their ass in order to hit a deadline for fresh content, and AFAIK, they don't know WTF they're talking about. Sucks to get stuck with the Features section, but if you show any depth of understanding in that section, you'll never get to cover hard news. I've never known a writer who wants to be the journalistic equivalent to Ugly Betty's Amanda, but I've known more than a few Marketing majors who were all over it.

Michelle dresses wonderfully, and will be a blessing to help fashion backwards women all over the US.

And Penelope Cruz is probably the best-dressed of all these starlets.

7. Where're all the gowns with cotton balls or chicken feathers stuck all over the? And Michelle's gown
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:37 AM by KittyWampus
was in line with an already existing trend. It didn't start one.

BTW, the asymmetrical strap on her gown was poorly executed. It should have either been thinner, tapered or left off.

14. It's FAR more likely that this is the look this season
And Michelle's dress reflected that look.

Most of those women have had their gowns for months.

Just a little reality check for you.

16. eh well, sorry but
I'm by no means a fashion expert but I do enjoy clothes and I hated Michelle's glaring yellow granny ensemble that left her so exposed while everyone around her was bundled in beautiful scarves and coats. As for the punk rock shredded bridal wear she wore to the balls...I would be surprised if anyone was truly impressed by her clothing and following her lead from that day or any other for that matter.

I think women should dress to suit their bodies not follow trends. Most adult women look ridiculous in current trends unless done in a subtle way that suits their own body. I don't think Michelle knows how to do this yet. She is so attractive/slender/tall she could look just stunning. Because she does have such potential in terms of her looks and figure I'm always left disappointed in what she wears.

She should invest in some mix and match beautifully custom tailored suits, cashmere turtlenecks and wool trousers and trouser cut boot leg denim and gorgeous crisp white blouses and interesting jewelry. And flats, lot's of gorgeous flat shoes. I want her to have her own flair but in a timeless classic way as would befit a woman in her position.

So far all I've seen her in is 80's geometrics and stripes, garish colors and lot's and lots of generic patterns, throw on dresses with exposed zippers! and the worst of the worst is those skinny legged jeans she wears! these are trends worn by high school-er's and college crowds not the First Lady of The United States of America.

I don't think MIchelle is setting trends at all; she's following them. and that is a shame.

17. I agree, and well said....she should always dress
classicly and timelessly. Trendy is never good, especially if you're in the public.
