"The total crowd in Washington, D.C., is estimated to be between 3 million to 4 million. The previous record for largest inaugural crowd was 1.5 million in 1965 for the swearing in of Lyndon B. Johnson. Before 10 a.m., the crowd at the Mall today had already reached 2 million."

According to the NY Times, "The crowd, before noon, was easily well into the hundreds of thousands."

No one really knows, but the Park Service says it will come out with an estimate for history's sake.
