America 2004 = Al-Anon
That's right, America is enabling a drunk father figure (or, at least, a former drunk who never got treatment).

He says something stupid, we (the media) looks the other way - not wanting to embarass him or rock the boat.

He acts out, we let him rage until he calms down - hoping the neighbors don't hear and think badly of us.

And on and on. The United States of Co-Dependants.

1. I've thought this for years...
It was true under Reagan, too, who was -- in 12 Step terms -- the "unrecovered child" of an alcoholic...

Sadly, though, Middle America hasn't "hit bottom" yet -- so, no real recovery, amends-making, etc...
