Speculation That Washington Governor Gregoire to be named Commerce Secretary
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 10:56 AM by IWantAnyDem
Just heard a guy from Seattle report on the Stephanie Miller Show that local news in Washington is reporting Gregoire left Washington state for Washington D.C. where she will be named Commerce Secretary.

Edite for this:

Where's Gregoire? Expect an announcement today
Gov. Christine Gregoire is out of state, but her office won't say where she is or what's she doing — other than to say she's not going to work for President-elect Obama.

By Seattle Times staff and wire

OLYMPIA — Gov. Christine Gregoire is out of state, but her office won't say where she is or what she is doing — other than to say she's not going to work for President-elect Obama.

Gregoire's mysterious absence left local political blogs buzzing with speculation that she could be in Washington, D.C., preparing to accept a job with the Obama administration.

Gregoire was on a plane to D.C. on Sunday morning. But Marty Brown, Gregoire's legislative liaison, said the governor's trip has nothing to do with a job in the new administration.

Speculation about Gregoire's whereabouts started after her office called The Associated Press on Monday afternoon to cancel her planned speech Tuesday at a pre-legislative session forum sponsored by the news agency.

2. KIRO TV SEATTLE IS SAYING........

.....Otherwise.....

"KIRO 7 learned Gregoire's location earlier Tuesday, but could not disclose it because of security concerns.

A number of bloggers speculated the governor would be named as president-elect Obama's Commerce Secretary after New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson withdrew from the running. An Obama spokesman, Robert Gibbs, denied that."

8. Damn. That puts our Lt. Gov in charge
Brad Owen has done very well in the diplomatic, largely ceremonial (and according to our state Constitution, entirely optional) post of Lieutenant Governor. I do not think he is really qualified to lead the state.

However, Gregoire is a very astute businesswoman and I think she will do well as Commerce Secretary. She has mitigated the financial collapse of state government by greatly increasing state exports and she is why, overall, Washington is in relatively better off than many other states. We still kind of need her.
