My brother got inauguration tickets!!!!!
He just got the letter from his congressman in the mail today for our tickets!!! OMG I am SO psyched! This was totally unexpected as we didn't think we'd actually get them and were planning on just going to the national mall or parade route!

And mods, if this is totally inappropriate please delete or move! I just couldn't help myself and had to share the good news!

:woohoo:  :toast:

And as an aside, the letter also states that the congressman's office where we're picking them up on the morning of the 20th - they're going to have coffee and doughnuts! :9 :loveya:

And I just adore your parade contribution! My future sis-in-law is going to be taking the pictures so I'll report back and post them to DU when we're back!

18. Wow! What a haul!
Houston to DC! And I do think you're right on both accounts as just for one count they opened up the entire national mall which is wonderful for anyone who wants to go but didn't get tickets! That or the parade was our original plan until the news today!

8. I'm glad! I was so psyched I had to post but wasn't sure where to post the news!
We were just going to go and have a ball in DC but this is really the cherry on top of it all! And my brother just got back from a tour of duty in Afghanistan so this will be quite the addition to the welcome home bash! He's making a scrapbook from all the random things I saved for him during the election and the letter and tickets (if they let us keep them) will be great to put into it!

26. My brother is really the one who deserves it!
I just got all the logistics taken care of while he was overseas! I think that him being a vet was what actually scored the tickets. His excitement was infectious when he told me about it, and it made me very glad that we decided to go all those months ago! Now, if only I can get him to bring his dress uniform!

4. I got 2 tickets from my congressman too!
Although I found out in an e-mail not in a letter, and I am just so incredibly excited about it. It's gonna be a long time to be in that cold weather but it is totally worth it.

10. Whoo! Maybe I'll see you there!
And bring hand warmers and thermals! It's definitely going to be worth every minute! :toast:

And email works just as well! I had emailed Senator Collins and they had emailed me back saying they didn't have anymore available which I think was a nice courtesy. I'm glad my brother got the letter (in more ways than one) as I think it will be a great addition to his scrapbook for the election!

15. You better doublecheck when you'll be picking them up
I just read in an article about the lottery Conyers had for his tickets yesterday that they all had to be given out by the 19th.

19. The morning of the 20th between 7 and 9 am!
My brother said they even included directions to the congressman's office in the letter!

I was surprised it would be that morning but not too surprised as when I called my senators offices they were doing the same thing - giving them out the 19th and 20th. I also know some people are getting them mailed to them (I remember reading another DU'ers post who this was the case for).

Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 09:11 PM by SharonRB
Let me see if I can find the article online. BRB

Here you go: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009901050353

And here's the applicable paragraph:

"Recipients must pick up their tickets at Conyers' Washington, D.C., office between Jan. 12-19. Officials are not allowed to mail the inauguration tickets or distribute them after Jan. 19, said Karen Morgan, director of communications for Conyers."

24. I thought mailing them was a bit weird
as that would give scalpers time to turn them around (I think scalping such tickets is so very wrong considering they should be free!). Interesting information though, I'll double check the pick up date with my brother just to be safe!

36. Maybe we should ask the wingnuts to pray for a snowstorm?
When they prayed for rain in Colorado that worked out so well. We'd probably get a January thaw! Quick, someone go troll freeperville and get a prayer thread running!

37. Yup. That may work. I live in CT and its darn cold here.
My daughters want to play in the snow but I am not going out there until it gets to at least 30 degrees and we are getting snow again on Wednesday. DC at least is a bit better then New England.

40. I'm a New Englander myself as well,
so I'll be getting that snow too. I swear we've already gotten enough this season, so maybe DC will feel balmy to me! Well, I can hope at least!

I hope that snow we're supposed to be getting doesn't have that bitterly cold wind accompanying it. I hate that, it actually hurts to breath it in when it's like that.

41. Yeah, DC will be like a vacation for you!
Its going to be a wintry-mix which means some ice involved, my least favorite kind. At 33 I am so afraid to drive in ice storms, I have had too many close calls over the years.

43. Ice storms are the absolute worst!
I totally refuse to drive when the roads are iced over. The only thing that could get me to do so would be a medical emergency! There is nothing, and I do mean nothing apart from dire emergency that can't wait for the sand trucks.
