Damn. This whole fiasco is Jeremiah Wright v. 2.0
Seriously, the arguments on both sides are the same and the same characters are replaying the same drama over again with Wrights name replaced with Warren.

Is this really something that DU should be focusing energy on? Will it really help any cause in the future?

1. Whose civil rights did Wright actively campaign against?

10. None to my knowledge.
I was referring to the automatic binding of Obama to a sketchy character that most liberals wouldn't agree with.

If you want an example that matches what you were looking for, how about the gospel singer that gave an invocation at one of Obama's events during the primaries? Perhaps thats an even more apt comparison to Wright.

2. symbols are important
especially in our short attention span, information overload world.

Obama has put forth a symbol that he will not dance with those what brung him. he will pander to the lowest fundamental denominator to get a vote. he has lost my trust.

6. he canpaigned as a unitier - and he doing that
Excluding those that disagree is a sign of immaturity and weakness. It is how junior operated.

Obama is showing that he is not afraid to sit down with those with whom he disagrees.

I am not a big Obama supporter - but applaud his attempt at unifying.

8. yeah, i feel real "united" now
the time for extending the olive branch to evil wingnut radical fundamentalists is NOT the inauguration. there was plenty of time to start inclusion... on BOTH sides... after the inauguration.

a very strong sign and symbol has been put out there, letting us know that again, we're just supposed to shut up and suck it up.

NO MORE.

should have voted for McStain.

just more "shut up, go away, now is not the time" to women and gays.

16. to refuse to even talk to your "enemies" is such an immature and silly behavior.
It is why junior will go down as the worst president ever. He did not want to have anything to do with anyone who offered a difference of opinion.

I find it refreshing that Obama is not taking that path.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 02:08 PM by musette_sf
there is a time to talk with your enemies.

it should NOT be at an important occasion for all of us who supported Obama.

there is plenty of time to have ecumenical talks galore, with all viewpoints in the room.

this is NOT the time.

i would have found THAT "refreshing".

ps, way to compare those who disagree with you to Bu$h. i see how small YOUR personal "big tent" is.

20. nope - it is the perfect time to talk to your enemies
let the world see you are serious about your message.

Are you trying to make this personal with me? Why - just because I have a different view?

Is it or is it not the way junior operated? Did he or did he not exclude anyone who disagreed? Did he or did he not even fail to acknowledge that there might be dissenting views?

Obama is showing some strength. He is doing what he said he would do.

And he is starting his administration down that path - on Day One.

3. TRANSLATED: "How does this help me when I'm not gay?"
If you don't see how providing a platform for hatred against the GLBT community is a problem then you are too absorbed with your own wants to understand anything that can be explained to you.

5. The names are very recognizable by now. They only surface
at times like this. They take a bad situation and make it 1000x worse. Warren was an insensitive pick, but people have turned this into WW3.

7. Wright was a little obnoxious with the press, but he spoke the hard truths in his sermons...
People balked at Wright because they didn't want to hear what he was saying about America's violent behavior in the world ~ they used his style as an excuse not to listen, the same way they used sex, drugs and rock-n-roll as an excuse not to listen to the message of the hippies.

Warren is a whole other thing, a true bigot who would undermine gay rights and women's rights.

A message board is a great place to talk about these things.

There were not going to be any "next two words." I was speaking for myself, and to be honest, the Presidential debates were the last thing on my mind when I made that post.

13. Interesting, since I supported Wright, and condemn Warren.
And I don't recognize the arguments or the people as being the same.

And I do think this is exactly what DU should be focusing energy on. Our ideals. Our values. Human rights. It's what some of us have done from the beginning, and what most of us continue to do. There are places we disagree over those values, but homophobia shouldn't be one of those places. If nothing else it should be pointed out that DU rules forbid supporting the views that Warren supports.

Another apt comparison, which I mentioned upthread, is the controversial gospel singer who performed an invocation at a prior Obama event.

22. This certainly is similar to the choice of Donnie McClurkin to help Obama win South Carolina.
I forgave Obama for that and supported him in the primaries. Might have been a mistake, as Obama clearly doesn't give a damn about my rights. He's far more interested in getting the religious right to like him, even if that means betraying every progressive ideal.

23. Me too. Those of us who support human rights defended Rev. Wright and Obama.
Those of us who support human rights are offended by the choice of Rick Warren.

I defended Obama strongly for months. I gave money to his campaign and voted for him in my swing-state primary and general election. Now that he's been elected, apparently my opinion doesn't matter anymore. He's off to make friends with the extremist right.

I'm not going to let anyone intimidate me into rejecting my own opinions and feelings about this.

24. Hope this doesn't come across as insensitive to you...
...but do you really take this gesture towards Warren as a negative harbinger of how Obama will approach GLBT rights during his presidency? I'm not saying you're necessarily incorrect in believing that, but from this one gesture I don't see how you can write him off so quickly.

26. #1, I haven't "written off" Obama.
#2, As I mentioned in my other post, this is the second time that Obama has disappointed me by elevating a very vocal, well-known anti-gay extremist to spotlight a key moment in his campaign, and now his inauguration. I forgave Obama the first time. Fool me once..

#3, In addition to cozying up to Donnie McClurkin and Rick Warren, Obama has said nothing about the passage of Proposition 8 in California and three other hateful erasures of gay rights on election day. His silence on this matter is deafening.

So, yes, I am feeling uneasy and I will continue to speak out. In fact, I'll speak out against Obama now where I haven't before (I've been silent about my concerns about some of his other cabinet picks and I've really put an effort into defending him here and elsewhere). Does this mean that I've "written him off?" I'm not sure what you mean by that. I won't donate anymore money to Obama for the time being, and I'll be more vocal in my opinion that he needs to be more progressive.

It's not all-or-nothing. You won't see me post - as gay folks are being accused of doing here - that Obama is "evil" or anything silly like that. But he has lost my whole-hearted support. He had that for a while, after I forgave him for Donnie McClurkin, but no more.

Obama was the first politician I ever felt especially positive toward. Now he's gone back to being just another Democratic politician.
