Boycott "Dollar Tree" (Woman murdered at work, her family denied benefits)
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 01:59 PM by ColbertWatcher
Late Wednesday, I posted an excerpt from a news story (Woman murdered at work, her family denied benefits) and it hit the greatest page, but has since fallen off. Please help get this thread on the Greatest Page with your kicks and recs. Thank you.

In the original thread, DUer qanda suggested Dollar Tree "needs the internet treatment"

And the internets went to work ...

But, most important of all, DUer barbtries found contact info for the store
http://www.dollartree.com/comment.cfm

Here are some examples of DUer's comments:

* from DUer barbtries

until you reverse your decision to deny the family of Taneka Talley their benefits stemming from her murder by a total stranger in your store, you will not have my business. how could you?

* from DUer Caretha

I certainly hope what I read from ABC News regarding your refusal to pay death benefits to Ms. Talley's family is incorrect. If I do not hear/read anything contrary to this incident about denying her family death benefits, I will never shop in one of your stores again, and I will repeat this story ad nausem to all my family, friends & acquaintances. I'm sure they will agree with me whole heartedly. BTW, incase you were wondering, there are many other retail outlets that provide the same goods at the same cost. You are easily replaced.

Have you no shame?

* from DUer MadMaddie

Subject: She is dead and it's your fault
<snip>
Because of the fact you did not protect your employee she is dead. And now you deny the family of Taneka Talley their benefits stemming from her murder by a total stranger in your store.

My goal is to make sure that anyone that thinks about shopping in your stores knows what you have done to this family.
<snip>

* from DUer kcass1954 (borrowed DUer MadMaddie's subject line)

Let me get this straight... Taneka Talley shows up for work at one of your stores, and while there, she is killed by someone she does not know. And this absolves you of your responsibility to pay benefits to her family? In the long run, it would be much less expensive for you to just pay the darned benefits. I intend to tell everyone I know about this incident and how you treat employees.

* from DUer roguevalley Told them the internet had it and good luck, they will need it.

26. No they are not the same company
Dollar Tree is Dollar Tree. I already refuse them custom and take it to a local business that is similar. All the $ item places are not Dollar Tree.
And for those who don't need to visit such places, much of what is for sale is not from China, but from the US. Just as much of the stuff at Macy's is from sweat shops and prisons, but not all of it is.

6. Get Olbermann on it.... It worked for the WalMart "Worst Person In The World"
WalMart caved in when Keith started his Daily "Worst Person In The World" segment.

Maybe it would work against Dollar Tree.

9. You know, this is really interesting because it explores the interplay of liability and hate crime..
legislation. I wonder if this might hit a higher court.

but I think the issue is, regardless for the reason of the attack, was there proper security in place?

15. Not according to California law
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 05:19 PM by Lilith Velkor
It would still be a personal connection.

Remember what a triumph over racism it was when a rich black man was allowed to get away with murdering his wife, just like rich white men do?

on edit: I will bow out of this thread now, because I've said my piece and this is an important issue that shouldn't be hijacked.

16. Yeah, I remember.
You're correct, of course, that Dollar Tree would probably fight it due to the "personal connection."

13. After reading the ABC news article, it appears as though Ms. Talley was discriminated in death
2 times. Once by her killer and now by her employers:cry:

21. Good luck to you.
Seems like this would be right up KO's alley.

"Personal connection" my foot. There was no "personal connection." This woman was the unfortunate first black individual in this sick man's sight that day. Had she called in sick to work, she would not have been killed. Had she been fired the day before, she would not have been killed. She probably wouldn't have been in his line of sight at all, unless she had some other reason for coming to the store. In short, she was in this man's line of sight because of her employment. To deny her death benefits because her employment was causational to her being in his line of sight, but wasn't the specific reason he killed her (he killed her simply because she was the first black person he saw, and would have done so even if she was walking down the same street to a friend's house) is cruelly picking nits in the name of "business." The company will only get away with it if it is allowed to by a lack of puiblicity.

23. That's actually not true...
I get my laundry detergent and other cleaning stuff there...and it's a heck of a lot cheaper for me than getting it at the regular store where it's sometimes 5x the price. I'm a grad student on a limited budget. I don't buy a lot of my stuff there, but paper products and cleaning supplies...it does save me money every month.

You can guarantee I won't ever go there again and there are three near my home.
