Details on Hillary-Barack Meeting
ABC News' Martha Raddatz reports: President-elect Barack Obama met with Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Thursday in Chicago to discuss the possibility of the senator becoming secretary of state.

A source with knowledge of the transition process describes the meeting as not a hard offer. Obama is more cautious than that.

He is doing this more elegantly, but a source said Obama took a big step toward Hillary. They had a long private meeting in which they talked about their philosophies and what had transpired during the campaign.

He was extremely respectful, saying she was great, and giving her a huge amount of support. He said that he knew how much she cared about health care but said there are other challenges, and wanted to reach out to her about secretary of state.

They were both cautious but again took a big step toward her. She reciprocated.

Obama does not want to be seen as being rejected by her, but it is “hers to turn down,” one source put it.

They have an agreement to have another meeting or phone conversation about this very soon.

27. Well, Obama cannot have only "Obama people", now.
Although, they will become Obama people, they may not be as disciplined as his campaign team was when it comes to leaks.

And, who knows. This could be a managed, intentional leak, to give Hillary attention and create more buzz. Obama's team is good at controlling the message, leaks and speculation is one way of doing it.

According to Marc Ambinder...

There's was a private meeting. Contrary to what I said earlier, Rahm Emanuel wasn't in the room. He was in DC. But no one was in the room with the principals.

Besides the fact she would be an OUTSTANDING choice for this position... do you believe Obama is so weak willed he can't stand up to his own chief of staff?

40. That would be interesting. Hillary could either be the most inspired pick for a
SOS in a long time or it could be a big mistake. I am going to keep my fingers crossed if it looks like she will be getting and accepting the job that it turns out to be inspired. I will say that Hillary certainly proved herself to be a team player for Obama during the GE and is a very effective communicator.

CNN is reporting that sources close to President-elect Barack Obama's transition team say New York Senator Hillary Clinton is one of several candidates being considered for secretary of state.
However, a source close to Clinton told NY1 Thursday that the senator has yet to be contacted about that, or any other cabinet position.

WASHINGTON (AFP) –

… Transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter denied reports that Christopher, who was secretary of state from 1993 to 1997, had been tapped for the role. Cutter said in a statement. "There's a lot of disinformation out there."

now Hillary has to decide whether she will go through that.

Why walk away from a safe, cushy NY Senate seat into a prominent cabinet seat fraught with challenge? There are two wars going on at the moment. You would have to have a certain degree of masochism to take this on.

37. The people who worked for his campaign love Obama and believed in their message.
His campaign people were with him from the beginning even when it looked like he didn't have a shot in hell. It's different when you helped build the campaign and the candidate from nothing.

A lot of the new people working for him now are just in it for the power. I don't think we'll see as much devotion from them.

Doors start lockin
Your old time connection
Change your direction
You aint gonna change it
Cant rearrange it

When its all the same to you, my friend

Its the same old story
Same old song and dance, my friend
Its the same old story
