CA-Sen, CA-Gov: Statewide Recruitment Thread
Our daily series of 2010 threads continues, and today the SSP Recruitment Express is running at full steam through the Golden State.
Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is term-limited, meaning that many, many Democrats are salivating over the opportunity to take back the Governor's mansion in California. There are a lot of potential names out there for Democrats (including Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, who has already announced his candidacy), but who would you like to see reach for the ring? And for the Republicans, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner seems to be their likeliest candidate, but will more names join the fray? (Paging Tom McClintock...)

On the Senate side, will Schwarzenegger actually challenge Barbara Boxer? It seems a bit unlikely to me at this point, but I guess you never know. If not, will any Republicans of note step forward (and I'm not sure if this guy really counts)?

And here's an interesting wrinkle. One of the rumored candidates for the gubernatorial election is none other than Diane Feinstein. Assuming she ran and won, she would be in the rare position of appointing her own replacement in the Senate. If such a scenario actually happens, whom would you like to see Feinstein appoint? There are a lot of choices on California's bench out there.

1. I think Arnold will challenge Boxer, but I think Boxer can beat him, but
we can't take it lightly.

3. He would lose by ten points.
His speeches praising Bush and his mere promise to caucus with the Republicans would do him in, provided a good campaign is waged by Boxer. I personally think he'll leave well enough alone. Furthermore, he probably couldn't get through a GOP primary with his recent support for the state court potentially overturning Proposition 8, and other "liberal" positions.

5. I don't think he will.
He barely wanted to spend any time in Sacramento--using his gulfstream to fly back and forth from his LA home to Sactown--so I don't know why he would want to go to Washington. That is a much harder flight to make, and being Senator isn't as prestigious as Governor of California. I think he will sit back and retire. Isn't he about 60 now?

2. Tom McClintock already ran and lost, he's run for just about every office in the state
so far and if he wins the district 4 race he won't be running for Governor. Tom McClintock is nothing but an obstructionist and trouble maker who has been on the public teat for far too long.

8. i can't, i was sure Brown would win by at least a few points. I cannot stand Tom McClintock
and would like nothing better than to him sent packing to which ever city he allegedly lives in now.

4. I'm not real crazy about Boxer right now
where was she during the campaign against Prop 8?

I saw that she sent out some form letter and email to some of her past donors and that's about it. Hell, Feinstein did a freaking commercial!

Ahnuld spoke out publicly against Prop 8-that's more than Boxer did

6. I'll give him credit there
He has a terrible taste in Presidential picks, but he is cheerleading the effort to overturn Prop 8 more than a lot of Democrats are.

11. Just remember he gave speeches last two repub
conventions to help elect Bush and McCain...that is enough for me to dislike the guy.

I think many in CA were mislead by his first time in 2002 when he made a promise to californians not to campaign for Bush and to stay non partisan. He only went to the dems side after he had to on a few occasions.

14. And not to belabor the point
but he was out before the election stummping for McCain and praising Palin as a great choice who would be ready to be President if needed. Palin. Just before the election he called Obama a 'Soviet style' socialist. Soviet. Palin.

15. he was wrong on McCain but he was right on Prop 8
and he's still right on Prop 8

I'm not defending him on some of his choices but he's standing with the GLBT community, which is more than some Democrats are doing right now

9. I used to live in CA for many years
and although a popular Senator, I don't see Dianne winning the governor's seat...but I've been gone awhile so I could be wrong about that.

I'd like to see Boxer challenged by Ahnuld because she has pretty much been safe since '92 and I think it would be good for her and California and I think she would win handily.

As far as Ahnuld goes, though, I don't think he'll run for Senate. He would actually have to work and build coalitions and compromise and I dont' think his ego is suited for that. Who knows, maybe he'll join up with Gore and get this renewable energy thing going on the right???

12. I believe that either mayor Gavin Newsome or mayor Antonio
Villagroisa will be our next governor. The governator is hated right now. He cannot beat Boxer in 2 years.

16. if Difi doesn't run for her seat again so she can run for Gov i could see Newsome
running for senate.

I would be surprised if she doesn't run to keep her seat though seeing as she might be the new chairperson of the Senate intel Comm.
