Cheney on economic numbers: Don’t forget about eBay

By Associated Press

Indicators measure the nation’s unemployment rate, consumer spending and other economic milestones, but Vice President Dick Cheney says it misses the hundreds of thousands who make money selling on eBay.

"That’s a source that didn’t even exist 10 years ago," Cheney told an audience in Cincinnati on Thursday. "Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."

San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc. is an Internet auction site where anyone can sell just about anything, including clothing, cell phones, jewelry, memorabilia, trinkets and automobiles.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards responded that Cheney’s comments show how "out of touch" he and President Bush are with the economy. "If we only included bake sales and how much money kids make at lemonade stands, this economy would really be cooking," Edwards said in a statement.

3. Yes, and count the change...
...in kids' piggy-banks and in the cushions of the nation's couches, sofas, davenports, loveseats, chairs, mattresses, and under radiators and under car seats. We'd be flush!

9. bingo

That is exactly the first thing I thought. Ketchup a "vegetable", now ebay is a "job". What's next, the "make money in your underwear at your table no down payment real estate" scams presentet as genuine employment? Instead of the old, tired mantra of " the paper's full of jobs" it will be "the infomercials are full of jobs". Mark my words, it's coming. ":grr:

7. This is true . . . John Edwards slam-dunked him on it, though
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 10:41 AM by mbali
He may have gotten the line from Elizabeth who, during the primaries, said,

"In the America in which John (Edwards) grew up, he could reach for the brass ring," she said, despite being the son of a mill worker. "More and more that is not the case."

Bush isn't doing enough to keep manufacturing jobs in America, she said.

"We cannot do each other's hair and teach each other dance lessons and have a sustainable economy," Elizabeth Edwards said.

8. Unf*ckingbelievable
There are a fair number of sellers who use eBay as an internet store outlet. eBay even caters to them with sellers who auction wholesale lots for individual item resale.

But there are even more who are selling their personal belongings - things they've collected over a lifetime, cherished books and momentos, and every household item they can spare - because they have no other income.

It's like saying bankruptcy auctions are up, and that that's a good thing.

10. I hadn't thought of this point...
...and it actually makes what Cheney said even worse, since it obviously did not occur to him, either. He was clearly simply blowing smoke - what a lawyer would call "reckless disregard for the truth" - and it's even more offensive when it comes from someone whose party wants to make it more difficult to declare bankruptcy and who has used his political career to build an undeserved business career that made him unmerited millions of dollars.

12. Saw it on CNN this AM!
Edwards had a really good comeback too:
If we count all the garage sales and lemonade stands in this country, out economy is booming.
