Or party affiliation, or any number of subsets we can come up with if we try hard enough. I told you it would be boring.
IMHO--it's the gawdawful necessary evil of the referenda process. It's those easily spun, get your state legislature off the hook, cheap, easy ways of GOTV by the other side.
I'm from AZ and we have the most gawdawful state legislature in the country (arguably, of course, but I claim state "pride" on this one). But we had our own Prop H8 (102) and we approved it too--while coming remarkably close to electing Obama (remember, this is McCain's home state). Why aren't we focusing on AZ? Or Arkansas?
It's quite simple--y'all KNEW we'd vote "yes." (FWIW I campaigned against it and of course voted "no.")
But California? Remember--McCain campaigned HEAVILY there even though the odds were against him. I sincerely believe that the McCain campaign and the RNC thought they could put Cali in play with Prop H8 (among many other things, but if there's one thing they do know, it's that tiny surgical strikes can have a big overall impact).
I don't discount that certain groups voted en masse in favor of H8 but while we gather the usual circular firing squad we miss something standing just outsideand it's way more corrupt and dangerous--yet it's a critical part of the political process. it's just being used in the most cynical of ways--not to mention tying up critical time at the actual balloot box--but that is another issue that plays into their cynical use of them as well.
Anyone care to discuss?
