Westboro Baptist Church will be picketing the funeral of Obama's grandmother
Not posting the link even if someone requests it, but this is from their press release:
WBC to picket the funeral of Madelyn Payne Dunham, - pursuant to the picketing laws of Hawaii or Kansas or, etc., wherever burial occurs, - in religious protest and warning to the living; to wit: "Prepare to meet thy God." Amos 4:11. Yes. Dying time is truth time, and reflection time, and time for meditating on the weighty issues of life: getting right with God, life, death, Heaven, Hell, sin, righteousness, judgment to come, etc. Obama says his grandmother Dunham raised him, and, her "influence on his manner and the way he viewed the world was substantial." If so, then she has much to answer for as she stands before the Lord. Obama says he will use the White House as a Bully Pulpit to advance the cause of murdering more babies and same-sex marriage. "God hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by Christ." Acts 17:31. "And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry to him day and night?" Luke 18:7. "For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompence, saith the Lord. It is afearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.." Reb. 10:30,31.
I hope one of the first things President Obama is able to deal with is these people.
But counterdemonstators can carry signs with "John 3:16" and "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." Matthew 7:1-2
Always best to counter these pricks with their own language.
The way that they have raised their kids to perpetuate the hate is abusive. I remember watching a BBC documentary about them called America's Most Hated Family and the kids were repeating things that they obviously did not understand. There were some who seemed a bit conflicted, though they tried to act like they were not. The adults in that "family" made me ill and I cannot believe that Child Protective Services has not done anything about what, to me, is obviously child abuse in that "family". They are a bunch of really hateful and twisted people.
A) They were denied entry because of threat to create hate speech B) They snuck in anyway and the RCMP (Canadian FBI) told them that they would not be able to protect them from harm C) They quickly went back over the border with no disruptions.
These people are hateful assholes, I wish Fred Phelps nothing but pain and agony
10. Ever heard of the First Amendment? We defend it not when it is easy
but when it is most difficult. Obama is now the President-Elect. Protests come with the territory. This is a clearly tasteless protest but apart from security restraints, they are allowed to do this under the Constitution.
Secret Service, CIA, FBI, I don't care. Just someone fucking keep these motherfuckers away from the funeral. Barack needs to say goodbye to one of the rocks in his life and he doesn't need to take this shit-- he'll be taking all kinds of shit once he actually becomes President. We need to have his back on this.
I'm seldom surprised at what low lifes these folks are but this breaks the meter. What a ghoulish display of barbarism! These are in no way Christians. Nobody but the Devil spends their days trying to squeeze more souls into Hell.
This is the element among us that is always seeking the dark ages and they are more dangerous than many are willing to even begin to accept. We can only hope that in the light of day they will be seen for what they are and will fade far into the background so that we can move forward and start to spread beyond this one world and never again risk the destruction of all that we have become and can be at the whim of a recessive psychology or a single event.
57. You shouldn't feel that way, they are not Christians, they are
the anti-christians. Their views are 180 from what anything Jesus spoke of.
I posted above on the best way to deal with them...laugh in their faces whenever the opportunity arises. It takes from them any "power" they think they have. They survive by hate, don't feed it, fight it. Seriously, the best way to fight these fools is to not thake them seriously...just laugh at them...it works wonders...:D
84. The way to deal with these EVANGELICAL WING NUTS
The way to deal with these EVANGELICAL WING NUTS
is to hit them where it hurts - in the $ pocket
They claim to be a Religious Organisation - they clearly are NOT - they are a Race Hate Organisation
Contest their "Church" or "Religion" based tax exemption status - once it is denied they have funding problems. QED
Their Race Hate activities are crimes - Lock them up with no chance of Bail - anyone trying to help them should also be arrested and charged with conspiracy to promote race hatred. (Or whatever that charge would translate into)
Where I am in Europe conspiracy to commit a criminal act has higher penalties than many lesser criminal acts themselves, sometimes as high as life imprisonment.
Most of the activities of these Zealots, Evangelicals or Fundamentalists can be defined as Race Hatred.
Free Speech is an Individual Right not a Collective one.
They can stand alone on any street corner they like to shout their free speech. Once there are more than the local limit for the number of protesters - arrest them and lock them up.
86. They said they would picket a military funeral and then didn't show up
Last year, in Northampton PA, they said they were going to picket the funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq. Hundreds of motorcyclists organized convoys, to keep them away from the funeral. The wackos never showed up.
If they came to protest the funeral of someone I loved, I can't see how I could ignore them. Are family members and loved ones not entitled to mourn in peace for a few hours?
Are the rights of protesters so important that they eclipse decency and privacy at a singular moment in a person's life?
Personally, this strikes me as a ludicrous policy. There are plenty of other times for protesting. Where's the humanity? If a person or group has a real issue to protest, they can do it without hate. Look at the Iraq Vets Against the War. They're a good example of freedom of speech rights. I'm tired of pretending we don't know what hate is or we can't define it, so it get's equal air time.
Hate is uncivilized and leads to bad things. Hate speech is not protected. This country is better than that. And no, I'm not advocating Fascism. There are gray areas that we are ready to delve into with delicacy and an eye on maintaining rights while encouraging a more accountable and civilized society. I'm tired of free speech being used as an excuse for dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric.
To misconstrue the intentions of free speech to mean you can say anything to anyone at anytime and it's free speech is ridiculous. It's just a symbol of how this country has been systematically taken down to pre-school level comprehension.
118. This is an opportunity for someone locally to organize a pro-active counter-demonstration.

I did this in Brooklyn right after 9/11 when them came to protest and this form of non-confrontational counter-demonstration apparently drives them more bonkers than they already are:
"Every Minute Counts" is where you get community members to pledge x amount of dollars for every minute that the Phelps crew is demonstrating. After they leave, and once the money is collected, you donate that money to a local LGBT organization.
I have no doubt that Fred would view a picket of Toot's funeral as the crowning achievement of his career as the world's most hateful and vicious sack of shit. However, I think it highly unlikely that, security conditions being what they are, he will get within a mile of it.
My heart sank totally when I read this. But I'm trying to remember that we'll have 4 strong years (minimum) of a Democratic lead that is centrist enough to not cause a "spring back" in 4 years (I hope).
Thanks everyone who posted jokes and sarcasm, a little laughter helped so much in making me feel better.
This is atrocious that this kind of hate group can exist in the USA. It's something I hope Obama puts a stop to.
I think they can be kept away, in this case, for national security reasons. Scumbags. I don't care if it's this funeral, Matthew Shepherd's or a soldiers, they have no sense of common decency. If they violate the orders of the Secret Service, can the federal government send them to Gitmo?
130. Ironic that they are quoting Amos, often called the prophet of social justice.
I don't even believe in God anymore, but I love this quote:
Hear this, you who trample upon the needy And destroy the poor of the land! "When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, Add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!" The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done!
But trust Fred Phelps to ignore that the Bible spends a lot more time talking about poverty than what people do with their privates.
This is bullshit you shouldn't be allowed to picket a fucking funeral. Picketing at a ceremony for the remembrance of someone that died is disgraceful and is not in any way exercising "free speech". I bet the surrounding areas of the ceremony aren't "free speech zones" :)
142. I have a long and very personal history with Phelps and his poisoned progeny.
I practically lived next door to these sad and sick wretches for the better part of a decade. My best advice is to ignore them. Fred craves attention. He seeks conflict. His family members, who comprise the bulk of the "parishioners," will eventually die off as a result of their own inbreeding.
Please. Just. Don't. Acknowledge. Them.
They are an unwitting self-parody of ignorance and hate. To grant them any more attention than one might in the act of viewing roadkill from a fast-moving car is to pay them undue honor.
