EU Leaders Congratulate Obama On Win
Brussels, Belgium (AHN) - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso led the continent in congratulating Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) for his poll victory as the first African-American elected to become president of the United States.

Barroso said Obama's win signaled it was time to renew the commitment between Europe and the United States through the forging of a new transatlantic bond.

"I sincerely hope that with the leadership of President Obama, the United States of America will join forces with Europe to drive this new deal. For the benefit of our societies, for the benefit of the world," Barroso was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who said Monday the next U.S. president's main agenda should be to find a solution to the global economic crisis, expressed his hopes for the future as well.

"I know Barack Obama and we share many values... We both have determination to show that government can act to help people fairly through these difficult times facing the global economy," Brown was quoted as saying by the German daily,

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Obama's win is an expression of the American people's faith in progress and in the future.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she looked forward to working with the U.S.'s 44th president to face new dangers and risks and seize opportunities made available to the global world.

Klaus Zimmermann, head of the German Institute for Economic Research, added that the American president-elect is the perfect choice to find a solution to the global economic crisis.

"A lack of trust and credibility are at the heart of the current financial crisis... Throughout the presidential campaign, Barack Obama has demonstrated both trustworthiness and a sound understanding of economic issues," Zimmerman was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle.

Zimmermann added that he expects Obama to tap unorthodox and unconventional policies based on the president-elect's pragmatic and cooperative approach to politics.
