"We've got some difficult days ahead, but it really doesn't matter with me now...
Because I've been to the mountaintop.

And I don't mind. Like anybody I would like to live a long life. Longevity has it's place.

But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land.

I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the Promised Land.

So I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."

- Martin Luther King Jr., Memphis, TN, April 3, 1968

He talks about the death threats against him near the end of his "Mountain Top" speech below. It was the day before his death.

Just before he goes into that, he talks about the Good Samaritan story, saying that those who passed by thought about what would happen to them if they stopped... but the Samaritan asked himself what would happen to the robbed man if he didn't stop. I think that was King's way of saying why he was taking the risk he knew was there, which is what he spoke of next, followed by his mountain top statement.

4. "Rosa sat so Martin could walk.
Martin walked so Barack could run. Barack is running so our children can fly."

This is a fellow DUer's sig line (sorry-- can't remember who), and to me, one of the most profound statements of this entire election process. It puts the present election into historical perspective, and accentuates the promising future that begins on Tuesday!
