What's with this Obama's Illegal Immigrant Aunt Crap?
Is this the GOP's last ditch effort, their ace in the hole/Hail Mary? Because if this isn't a transparent ploy, then I don't know what is. I have a feeling this is really going to back fire bad on the Rethugs. I mean it sounds like Obama hardly knows this woman, and she is a half aunt on his father's side? What is a half aunt? What do you guys make of this story?

AP: Obama aunt from Kenya living in US illegally

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.

The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

Onyango is not a relative whom Obama has discussed in campaign appearances and, unlike Obama's father and grandmother, is not someone who has been part of the public discussion about his personal life.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.

Onyango's case — coming to light just days before the presidential election — led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday's election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.

The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango's case coming to light so close to the election.

One of the sources acknowledged he was not a supporter of Obama or John McCain and said he has no plans to vote on Tuesday. He said that was not a motive for releasing the information.

Kenya is in eastern Africa between Somalia and Tanzania. The country has been fractured in violence in recent years, including a period of two months of bloodshed after December 2007 that killed 1,500 people.

The disclosure about Onyango came just one day after Obama's presidential campaign confirmed to the Times of London that Onyango, who has lived quietly in public housing in South Boston for five years, was Obama's half aunt on his father's side.

It was not immediately clear how Onyango might have qualified for public housing with a standing deportation order.

1. I figure we don't need 30 threads on this.
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 05:35 AM by FrenchieCat
THus far there is one in Breaking news, 2 here, and one in General discussion, last I checked.

One poster was kind enough to delete his OP on same subject...cause he realized that Drudge, AP and Fox wouldn't love nothing more than we discuss this shit all weekend long.

So, we figure, if there is no blog panic on this story, they'll have to try real hard on their own to fan this out by Tuesday to the masses by voting day.

There is no time for us to debug it, cause it sounds complicated...and we don't have any real facts, and I doubt they have any either.

Yes, of course it is a set up.

Barack Obama alluded to something like this. They won't give up power easily.
They know how the Blogosphere reacts. They are counting on us of getting this story out of them.
That's why they went the AP route. They are running out of time.

22. I don't think it was quite thirty
Also, it's not like I am talking about this on a bipartisan site. I don't think I am swaying any DUers to go to the dark side. I resent your implication that I am somehow helping the Republican "Cause", in anyway.

3. It makes their job harder.
What travels via the Internet, travels fast and wide. They know this.

I don't understand why people are naive in not understanding that certain powers would "use" the Internet exactly for situations such as these.

28. I will disagree with you again
The newspapers picked it up, then the cable news, then the right wind blogs, but we are not supposed to discuss it on a Dem site because that will somehow make it bigger than it is. It makes no sense and I resent the hell out of the attempted censorship of what can and cannot be discussed here. The wonderful upside to this is Conyers is on it and wrote a letter asking for the leak to be investigated. That is a story I hope gets a lot of traction..the attempt by someone in the Bush administration to influence the election.

4. If I am not mistaken, a woman with the surname Onyango married obama's grandfather after Obama's
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 05:40 AM by No Elephants
blood grandmother left his grandfather. She did, however, help raise his father. If I am correct, this woman would not even be a blood relative of obama's. It's nice that Obama re-connected with his Kenyan relatives, whether by blood or marriage, but he can hardly be held responsible for all that they do.

I have no trust in AP New bc of Fournieer anyway, so I am not betting the farm that this woman is an illegal immigrant in the first place. Whether or not she is, what on earth would that have to do with Obama? Did he smuggle her in?

It's another attempt at guilt by association--and very tenuous associations at that. In other words, it's more crap slinging from the people who specialize in it bc their policies brought us worldwide economic collapse and they have no policies to offer but more of the same. Bush is working on more de-regulation, even as we post. So, crap is all they got, and it is not even solid crap. It is crappy crap.

As Bill Clinton said, "Don't change the subject." Don't let anyone else change the subject and don't help them change the subject.

Focus. Volunteer. Vote.

6. 4 years and this comes up today?
no, it's quite obvious that this "news" has been in the GOP op research files probably since last year. But it is such a hopelessly unusable piece of mud that the GOP is desperately hoping something will stick somewhere to shave a point off anywhere. Save a senate seat, save a house seat, whatever it takes. It's crap but McCain's completely dysfunctional team hasn't been able to dominate a news cycle since the Palin pick, so it's crap flying time.

8. She's the daughter of Obama Granfather through his third wife
Hussein Onyago is Aunti Zeituni's and Uncle Omar's father.

Auni Zeituni would be the daughter of Auma, whom Obama refers to as his "Grandmother", though Barack Obama's real granddmother on his father's side is Akuma.

BArack Obama is not particularly close to this woman and I believe he has met her once. I don't believe he has ever met Uncle Omar.

This would be similar to relatives I have through my father's side of the family who currently live in Poland (to the best of my knowledge).

12. There is no family tree
That won't drop a few loose nuts if you shake it hard enough. The Repubs should not even go there. This isn't just guilt by association, it's guilt by two or three degrees of separation.

They've scraped the bottom of the barrel so hard they've broken through to the floor and are now digging.

This just looks desperate.

15. Apparently one of the sources of this confidential NIS information is not a supporter of McCain or

Obama and is not planning to vote on Tuesday.

Yeah sure. Just doing it out of civic duty and
a desire that the truth be told.

How noble.

18. Yeah, if I were McCain......
I would NOT want to play this up this week-end. Fox's website has this plastered all over the front page. Attacking family members is usually not a smart political move. And this is a frail elderly woman that is a threat to no one, and these photos that Fox is showing make you feel more sympathy for this person than anything else. This story will rile up the base / Fox News / Matt Drudge, etc....but other than that, it will make no difference.

I thought family's were off limits? McCain campaign needs to remember this since they whined when Bristol Palin was the topic of discussion.
I've elected to turn the news off in these final days.
I went to the hospital twice in the last two weeks with because I thought I was having a heart attack. Turns out I was having panic attacks??
Yeah. It's that intense for me.
I guess I'm what you all would call a "hand-wringer".
Who knew? I wish I could go to sleep and wake up Tuesday night at 7 pm.
These gotcha stories bug me because I don't want this thing to be close. I want it over as soon as possible.
