Mitt Romney aides behind Palin "Diva" trash-talk
http://spectator.org/archives/2008/10/27/post-defeat-planners

Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers, some of whom are currently working for Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin's bid for the White House, have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election. "Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012," says one former Romney aide, now working for McCain-Palin. "The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney. He's in charge on November 5th."

Romney has kept a low profile nationally since being denied the vice presidential nomination. He is currently traveling for the National Republican Congressional Committee in support of some House members, and has attended events for a handful of other House members who have sought his support, but he has traveled little for the McCain-Palin ticket. "He said the only time he'd travel for us is if we assured him that national cameras would be there," says a McCain campaign communications aide. "He's traveled to Nevada and a couple other states for us. That's about it."

<snip>

Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a "diva" and was going off message intentionally. The former and current Romney supporters further are pushing Romney supporters for key Republican jobs, including head of the Republican National Committee.

29. Mitt Romney will always be a Mormon and for some people on the other side
that matters. They will never accept leadership from a person who is part of a 'cult'.

and esp. against Palin. I think everyone recognizes she has energized the Republican base in a way that Romney never could.

13. This makes sense. Mittens fancied himself the hier apparent
To be the leader of the repubs, after the McCain campaign goes down in flames. Now Palin is on the scene, and she just threw a big monkey wrench in those plans.

16. Just what we need -- a Mormon
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 11:33 AM by nichomachus
The Mormons have poured $10 million into CA in an effort to write discrimination - and Mormon theology -- into the state's constitution. What we don't need is a guy in the White House who is a front man for the hierarchy of the Mormon church.

23. I think it's the ultimate irony that the Mormon church, which pays lip service
to its "ban" on polygamy, is trying to codify one man/one woman as the only type of marriage. Laughable, actually.

32. Until Palin, it was conventional wisdom that Mitt was next in line
because he fell on his sword in the primaries and started chatting up McCain afterward. Mitt and his army are making sure their territory is being well marked. I mean...after all...he invested a lot of cash in that venture and it damned well better pay off.

It doesn't matter who has McCain's political blood on their hands, he's old news. But if Romney is seen to have backstabbed Palin, that will start him off badly with the fundie base. Palin is more than capable of running a campaign just to "get" Romney.
My guess is that Romney knows a couple of things. First, Obama will be elected. Second, Jeb Bush will be the GOP's man in 2016. No other GOPer will be able to raise serious $. His only shot at the White House will be to take a shot at Obama in 2012.

41. I don't see Jeb going after an incumbent President
If Obama has solid to good approval ratings, he'll be a beast to deal with. He'll have incumbency on his side, and no one, not even a Bush, raises money like BO. I don't see Jeb taking the risk of losing an election when Obama will not be on the ticket in 2016. Besides, 2012 is too close to the end of his fuckup brother's Presidency. W will still be a bad "word" four years from now.

Sounds like they are trying to undermine Romney for '12, but we really don't know if what they are saying is true. Still, interesting how the GOP is tearing itself apart.
