DELIBERATELY SEXIST!!!!!
At a Sarah Palin rally in Tampa, Florida today, "The View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck slammed media coverage of the $150,000 in Republican National Committee expenditures on high-end clothing for Palin.

"Now, with everything going on in the world, seems a bit odd," Hasselbeck said. "But let me tell you, this is deliberately sexist."

In a moment of unintended irony, an audience member cat-called Hasselbeck with a whistle in the seconds after she made the comment.

-----------------

Yeah! That's why they are tearing Michelle Obama to shreds over her cheap clothes completely devoid of any patriotic paraphernalia...no flags, no yellow ribbons, not a trace of cammo, or jewelry made by a family member or school child!!!!! HOW DARE SHE!

Actually, Hasselbeck is absolutely correct, this entire thing with Palin's wardrobe IS deliberately sexist. And she is absolutely correct that the amount of attention paid to this is deliberately sexist. But she is absolutely wrong about where she is laying blame. The republican's decision that there was some NEED to make her over in such a way, because, of course she can't really dress herself. Now they have to deal with the fact that it is their sexism that deems that women NEED to be made over to be legitimate was a stupid idea that did not make the American public look beyond her stupidity.

I never heard a democrat make fun of Hillary's pantsuits (which I thought were great).

Anyone who cannot readily sense that Hasselbeck is a fool after the first word rumbles outta her mouth - is a fool themselves.

5. I'd Call It More Cluelessly Sexist
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 10:53 AM by Crisco
There's just no way Palin's Alaska wardrobe would have made the cut with the media or Republican *donors.* What, you think she was going to the convention in a sweat suit or a pink parka? Anyone in TV media knows very well how much it costs to dress for the camera - or they would if they didn't have trade deals with sponsors providing their wardrobes gratis.

"I never heard a democrat make fun of Hillary's pantsuits (which I thought were great)."

Then either you weren't listening, or you didn't have text-to-speech turned on while you were reading DU.

10. deomcrats and Hillary's pantsuits
I was referring to the democratic politicians. My point is that who threw the moat barbs at Hillary HUMMMM???? The same repugnicants that now assume that any vagina will win over a bunch of stupid voters. And while we're at it, let's make sure it's a good lookin vagina that doesn't have much to say.

I am not saying that it was out of the question to hire a coach, or a stylist, but to assume that someone NEEDS 150K of makeover plus the stylist being the highest paid person on staff that assumption is much more sexist than anything I have heard in criticism of Palin.

6. Can someone explain Hasselbeck's career - the fact that she *has* one, I mean

without resorting to sexism as the cause?

As far as I can tell she has had a couple of jobs on TV only because men find her parts nice to look at. You would not have to go far to find much more articulate female advocates for conservative politics, but they might not be "spokesmodels". It's just kind of funny to hear a woman, who has gained everything she has by conforming perfectly the desiderata of patriarchy, turn around and appropriate the language of feminism to shield another of her kind from accusations of inappropriate personal use of campaign funds. Funny, as in I can't believe it has come to this...

Above: Elizabeth Hasselbeck, nearly winded from speaking out against immigration, launches into a tirade against rescinding the Bush tax cuts for the richest 1%. "A flat tax for those with flat abs!" she hissed.

7. Why is it sexist to criticize misuse of funds?
If the DNC had bought Obama and his family $150,000 worth of designer duds, I'd be mad, too. But to my knowledge, the Obama family buys their own clothing.

If I need to look good for a business meeting and go buy a new suit, etc. I can't claim it as a business expense.

To my knowledge, the only people who can do that are those who are required by their employer to buy uniforms.

9. It IS sexist.
As for Hillary's pantsuits, plenty of people have criticized her for her pantsuits and that included quite a few Democrats. She was bashed mercilessly from both sides of the political spectrum. Palin is just getting a smidgen of what has been was doled out to Hillary for years.
