Tiny's road rage. (and canvassing for Obama)

Tiny's road rage. (and canvassing)

Friday am I was driving to work in the usual crowded DC-area (North Arlington-Falls Church for the natives) traffic. Some guy in a nice imported car swerved around my car (a domestic hybrid). Not unusual in rush hour, so I didn't think much of it but then he rolled down his window and flipped me off then started making the "Loser L" with his free hand and slowed down to make sure I (finally) saw it. Yeah, dude whatever. Got it. You don't like Obama. He drove that way for a full minute then sped off, cutting in and out of traffic. I caught up to him less than a mile away at a light and he started doing it again. I just ignored him. Let him wonder what I did or didn't see.

I am guessing his actions were due to my Obama stickers. I suppose he could have taken a dislike to my car's color or something. I didn't cut him off and don’t drive slowly so I doubt it was my driving.

I had two thoughts as he sped off.

1: He sure puts a lot of effort into being an asshole.

2. This is a very blue area, so he is going to be very unhappy election night! (heh heh)

Canvassing

FWIW, I was doing door-to-door for Obama in my neighborhood the night before and the people we spoke to were ENTHUSED for Obama. We were not visiting the die-hard Democrats either, this was the sporadic voters and casual voters. The die-hard Ds are contacted to see if they need a ride or an absentee ballot, but otherwise are not constantly visited unless the precinct captain feels they need to be. I haven't seen a canvasser yet. When I asked our local precinct captain why, she laughed and said "because you're marked as a D+," i.e., votes every time and always votes Democratic. They just check in with me to see what lawn signs and bumper stickers I need. (grin)

The enthusiasm I saw was really quite striking. The Hispanic homes were very guarded (who are these two middle-aged Anglo guys with clipboards?) until we said we were there for Obama, then BOOM. Out come the family members to greet us, take the information (in English and Spanish), ask for lawn signs, bumper stickers, etc.

Two people complained that we were the 4th Obama group to visit that week. We apologized nicely and said thank you for your time. One retired military guy we spoke to was a McCain supporter until Colin Powell endorsed Obama. Now the retired guy is rethinking.

It was trash night so we helped a little old lady who was struggling with wheeling out her trash can. She was friendly but kept ranting about "SOCIALISM!" Yeah, she's a McCain voter.

I haven't done door-to-door before. It wasn't easy (in person I am very introverted and talking to strangers about politics can be difficult) but it was the enthusiasm that made it do-able and sometimes enjoyable.

1. Hope he gets pulled over the next time he tries something like this.
Sounds dangerous.

4. Not sure what this is, but is it supposed to be burnt? Or is that
just well done?
