to figure they've been saving this for the home stretch. Even the article that appeared a day or so ago about McCain saying Wright would be off limits was a joke. Does anyone really think that anything would be off limits with that campaign?

6. No need to counter.
The public knows by now who Rev. Wright is and Obama has addressed it. I believe that revisiting Rev. Wright will result in another percentage point for Obama. It clearly shows that McCain has NOTHING and is DESPERATE. That equals LOSER and the public will perceive it as such.

Obama does not need to fall into the trap of defending himself on Wright AGAIN.

9. Brand them as racists who would use Ashley Todd as a tool for social unrest.
I agree with the folks who believe that they should keep Todd's story in the MSM, especially the part that the McCain camp tried to inflame tensions without fact-checking the entire truth.

Although Mr. Obama is too nice to do this, this should be placed into the hands of the surrogates.

18. Who Is John McCain?
They should run an ad with footage of John McCain earlier in the year talking about how he was looking forward to an honorable campaign about the issues, then talk about all the attacks and 100% negative ads that have nothing to do with the issues. Cap it off by pointing out that McCain wants to spend so much time trying to define Barack Obama that he really hasn't offered much of any reason why people should vote for McCain.

24. There is no REAL story with Rev Wright... so let them feel more backlash
Wright's guilty of making 1 statement about "chickens coming home to roost" which was taken out of context.

He's guilty of saying "god damn america" in a sermon about justice in america.

Wright serves the GOP much better as a bogeyman than as a real scandal. They know this and just hope the truth wont fully come out.

Other than having MSNBC and FOX News play their commercial for free to talk about it and analyze it. They would need to play in some very expensive media markets to have a big effect. Also, this B-girl story threatens to continue driving the news cycle at the beginning of next week no matter what commercials are released. McCain is toast.

29. It is sad that they have no concern about McCain's honor, this campaign has destroyed him.
This was the last piece of honor he had left. If they go there, that will be it. Complete disgrace of a man who stated that honor was a value of his.
Politically, it is too late in the campaign to try, and yet another tactic (exhausting to watch such a mess of a campaign). This late game character assassination does not work. All the polls have shown, it does not work. Especially, after the public saw Senator Obama in the debates. It just will backfire on the McSame camp.

I know...what honor. I was making a very feeble attempt just in case any who would be reading from a different camp would see that and reconsider ( I know I am in la la land on that).
It is painful for me to watch the depths of the gutter the McSame camp is in. The last ad with Biden's voice over, was horrid, really horrid. From strictly a political study, it is awful to watch how terrible that campaign has been run...
And, that said, seeing what the McSame camp is capable of, I want an Obama landslide so they can not steal anything from US.

67. Yep. Hannity did Obama a huge favor by jumping the gun on this.
Also, CNN had two focus groups on last night and the participants said that a candidate's church should be off limits. That the candidate should not be held responsible for their pastor's words. They really did not like the Rev Wright story and thought is was inappropriate. These were Republicans, Independents and Democrats.

Not only is it old news, it is likely to backfire.

39. Like Ayers, it will be seen as "not this old shit again"; so use AIP as fresh meat
Edited on Sat Oct-25-08 07:59 AM by DeschutesRiver
if Obama were to counter-punch with a short ad listing a few of the actual facts about Palin and her husband's AIP involvement, it will be fresh as a daisy to most people.

Rev Wright = guy who is a man of god, who sometimes was ticked off at our country for the way our country treated part of the population. Demands solutions within the framework of the existing government and country. Someone who Obama knew as a pastor.

AIP = working movement to remove Alaska from the U.S. A group with goals like those who took down the Murrah Building in Oklahoma. A group actively working to remove themselves and their state from this country, and willing to do violence to achieve the goal.

A group that Tawd Palin verifiably belonged to, that Sarah likely belonged to up until she became mayor (see their own tape discussing this and her prospects by going "under cover" as a member of one of the normal political parties, ie Repub), a group she spoke to as late as this year wishing them well with their goals, and evidence of the AIP people with whom she attempted to stack some official state positions, etc.

This is not a girl scout cookie group, or a group that is unhappy with the treatment of some members of society. This is a group designed to remove Alaska from the rest of our society in the USA. By violent means if necessary. Murrah Building bombing kind of folks.

And if Obama's team just stuck to a couple of unrefutable facts, ie what the group is, what they've said/done, the fact of Todd's recent past membership, and Sarah's support via speechs as governor at their meetings, it will hit people who've never heard of it like a hockey puck to the head.

41. Counterpunch comes from Anchorage Daily News...
Palin blessing echoed extreme strategy

Published: October 25th, 2008 12:19 AM
Last Modified: October 25th, 2008 03:15 AM

Most who watched the YouTube clip of Rev. Thomas Muthee's "laying on of hands" ritual protecting Gov. Sarah Palin from witches at least raised an eyebrow. Witchcraft is considered hocus pocus by many Americans but has a distinct cultural context in Kenya and other parts of Central Africa where Muthee is from.

Extreme Christian Nationalists not only believe that the United States was founded as a Christian nation but that its institutions should be run entirely by fundamentalist or evangelical Christians. They believe they have a mandate to purge our institutions of "humanists" who believe that humans are in control of their own destiny, progressive Christians and non-Christians. They believe there are seven areas of society that must be controlled, the so-called Seven Mountains Strategy: church, family, education, government and law, media, arts and entertainment and business.

Muthee echoed this Christian Nationalist strategy in his Palin blessing sermon, where he stated, "When we talk about transformation of a society, a community, it's where we see God's Kingdom infiltrate ... seven areas in our society." Muthee went on to describe his version of the Seven Mountains Strategy and when he got to politics he was praying for Gov. Palin.

About 40 percent of the U.S. population describe themselves as fundamentalist or evangelical but not all subscribe to Christian Nationalism. Michelle Goldberg estimates about 10 percent to 15 percent of the U.S. adult population are Christian Nationalists. They are overwhelmingly white and Republican and make up a significant part of the "base" of the party. A number of notable spokesmen of the conservative religious right are associated with Christian Nationalist beliefs, among them Franklin Graham (but not his father Billy), Pat Robertson and Douglas Coe.

Christian Nationalism is a form of American exceptionalism -- the idea that Americans are unique because of our heritage. Christian exceptionalism dates back to Puritan leader John Winthrop. Normally exceptionalism is recognized as the unique founding of the United States built on immigrant pluralism and based on Enlightenment ideals. But Winthrop promoted a different type of exceptionalism. In his "shining city on the hill" sermon Winthrop rejected the equality of religious pluralism and affirmed instead that the United States is a Christian nation built on Christian, not Enlightenment, principles and was to be ruled by Christians.

We should run ads highlighting all of McCain's flip flops. Then again, there isn't enough advertising space available for this.

62. The media will run the ad over and over for free
Almost every night on CNN the last week I have heard the question when is McCain going to bring up Wright as if they are begging McCain to do so, they don't have to because asking about him they are doing the job for him.

Only if senator Obama feels the need. I don't think he needs to go there though.

64. I saw my first one today.
On CNN. I've seen two 527 anti-Obama ads. One of them mentioned Wright, but he wasn't the main focus. It was a jumble of things, and Wright was at the very end. I don't see how this ad could change any minds. The other ad didn't mention Wright at all.

I'm in Michigan where McCain stopped running ads a couple of weeks ago. Obama has had the airwaves all to himself.

65. I doubt there is any ad about any topic McCain can run that will
change the course of this election. No one cared about Ayers - in fact it backfired on them - and no one cares about Rev. Wright. That said, if we've got a 527 to run a compilation of the witch doctor tape, Hagee and the rest of them, it would be amusing.

68. I came in a little late to the Primary party
What is this controversy boil down to for Obama anyway? O.k., so he want to the church run by a fiery African-American pastor- who has a (legitimate) beef with some things that have happened to African-Americans in the past- for several years.

What exactly are critics saying that his attendance says about Obama and what he believes and how he'll govern as President? Are they suggesting that perhaps Obama shares such radical views? I understand that Obama eventually denounced some of Wright's more incendiary comments/views and stopped attending his church but I'm still not clear exactly how it can be realistically assumed that anybody who attends a church agrees 100% with EVERYTHING being espoused and there is no evidence AFAIK that Obama shares some of Wright's more "radical" views.

Could somebody break the whole thing down for me or at least point me in the direction of a good article that does? Thanks!

really that anal?

78. The rantings of a
crazy person.

When you see a kook carrying on in a median, do you usually listen to the crazy rantings, or remark that there's some kook ranting and raving?

81. It's old news. People either care or don't, but it's nothing that will change opinions.
.... the only good thing about the heated primary battle, well other than the fact it got Democrats more fired up about an election than we have been in a long damn time, was that all of the Wright BS is old news to people.

If Ayers didn't make people change their minds, Reverend Wright will not either.

It is not an effective last-ditch tactic -- and the fact that's all they have left is SO telling.

82. God help me if everything my pastor said was attributed to me
they have their wacky days, even the best of them.

and lots of us just go because of the denomination, if the pastor spouts off about something completely unrelated to that, does that somehow mean that i believe it?

i hate to rehash this whole thing but it just bugged me, this whole guilt by association nonsense.
