Obama's grandmother Madelyn Dunham in fragile health

Now, just two weeks before the election of his life, that other maternal figure—Madelyn Dunham,
who helped raise him—is in such fragile health that family members are gathering at her bedside
in Honolulu.

The country hasn't really met this important figure in Obama's life. Dunham, who will be 86 on Sunday,
has rarely spoken to the press, and she doesn't appear at campaign events or important ceremonies.

Yet she is a crucial part of his story, a woman he speaks of often when he's campaigning. He has invoked
memories of her at his most crucial moments in politics, notably when dealing with the complex
multicultural tapestry that is his personal narrative.

Those close to Obama say she is more than just a part of that story, she's part of his personality—
a towering image reflected in her grandson right alongside that of her daughter, his mother,
Stanley Ann Dunham.

16. She's already voted absentee, as I understand.
It would be nice if she lived long enough to see him inaugurated.

20. I have heart disease and every once in a while, I have chest pain.
Lately, when that happens, all I can think of is "Not until Nov. 5th"!!!!!!!!!! This truly is the election of my lifetime.

22. Don't take this the wrong way, but can you early vote?
My Dad suffered with CHF for years, and my husband is a heart patient as well. (However, thankfully hubby is feeling great these days--and working to STAY that way!) Anyhow, I understand a tiny bit of what you deal with as a heart patient, I think.

My main thinking in asking that question, is, right now the weather seems to be pretty good in a lot of the country and flu reports are not as common as they will be in a another couple of weeks. Those were ALL things we watched out for with my Dad. IF you do have the ability to early vote you might be able to do it now and protect yourself a tiny bit.

8. I think I heard she fell and broke her hip?
That kind of injury often sets off a decline in a person her age and often leads to death. It's not the fracture that causes death. I guess it's just adding another insult to an already deteriorating body that hastens death. Many recover completely, but a good number just goes into decline.

11. I heard she broke her hip recently, but I also heard that part of the reason...
... he took that family vacation in Hawaii a few weeks ago was to be with her because she was ill.

Whether or not that was the same illness (broke her hip weeks ago) isn't relevant, probably. If she's still recovering from that, and in serious conditon, then she's not doing too well. And if she already had something before the broken hip, that's not great either.

Sending positive thoughts outward! Here's hoping she gets to see her little Barack get elected president! I'm sure nothing would be more fulfilling and make her more proud at this stage in her life.

17. She broke a hip
and even with rapid surgical repair, 50% of people who break a hip die within the next six months.

10. While Barack is in Hawaii - VOLUNTEER, phone bank, GOTV, call the campaign..
...do data entry, just DO SOMETHING.

I will be making more calls this weekend - (have to work next two days).

This is OUR campaign. We can keep it on the track for Barack while he visits Toot. It's the least we can do for our next President.

14. She knows Barack will prevail.
Hopefully she recovers and can share the joy with the rest of this world.

If it's her time then perhaps she can share that joy where she goes next.

18. God Speed
The thoughts and prayers of all of us are with you and your family, Senator. My mother is still going at 92 (turning 93 in November) and is readying her wheelchair for the vote of her life on November 4. She has already said she will proudly place her vote for Obama in his grandmother's name.

19. I hope she is able to hang in there. She is a great woman.
I am also worried about the added stress on Mr.Obama during what has to be an already stressful time in his life. I want to have her see her grandson elected president.

21. Please hold on to life, Mrs. Dunham.
I so want you to see the fruit of your labor and love. And I want your grandson to enjoy the knowledge that you are watching him take the oath of office on January 20. Please, hope, work, pray, heal, live. We are rooting and praying for you, dear woman.
