The last McCain holdout at work just told me he's voting Obama!
He's actually a very decent guy, but he's very much a good ol' boy redneck (and, as a Georgia boy, I can say that with expertise!) and he can be kind of closed-minded. Not dumb, by any means, but set in his ways. We've had some decent political debates in the past, and he argues the Republican point of view pretty well. We've disagreed without ever letting it get personal, which is good. And he's been the first to defend Obama against any race-based attacks, so I know he's not a racist.

Anyway, we haven't talked about the election in a while, but he came up to me today and asked "So, did you catch the last debate?"

I told him yes. He kind of sighed and looked a little sad for a second, then said "Yeah. I guess I'm voting for your boy Obama."

I told him that, if it makes him feel any better, he can think of it as a one-time thing and go back to voting Republican next election, to which he said, "Well, we'll see how he does when he's in office. If he does a good job runnin' things, who knows?"

I'm stunned, honestly. He's not a huge McCain fan, and he's not a fundie nut so Palin didn't really do much for him, but I was sure he'd just hold his nose and vote along party-lines, rather than vote for a Democrat.

So +1 in Florida! And my work is now 100% blue!

:bounce:

Plus, Obama's coming to town on Tuesday and I have all day off work!

That's great news. We need every vote we can get in Florida.

3. Miami-Dade County election officials are preparing for a 90% turnout!
So said one of the staffers at the Obama HQ where I was phone-banking today. If we get that kind of turnout, that's massive for us. Obama will take Miami-Dade, it's just a question of "By how much?"

2. Good for him. If Republicans truly love this country they will vote
for Obama.

4. I have a 'pubbie co-worker...
whose husband is about to be laid off. If that happens, she will lose her McMansion. She said nothing when I mentioned the ugliness at the Palin rallies. I even said, 'They will not be happy until Obama is assassinated.' NOTHING. I'm going to give her some credit and say that I was paranoid in believing she actually responded in such a way as to agree with my statement, that, they want Obama to be assassinated. I am going to lay on her hard next week. I am convinced that she's a good person worth redemption. We'll see.

6. I'm hounding everyone I know to vote early.
I can be insufferable when I have to. Even the ones who don't care about politics will be voting Obama just to shut me up!

9. This is awesome! Every little bit helps, I swear. Today, a woman
pulled over and parked her car and she and her daughter rang my doorbell to ask where I got my Obama yard sign. I couldn't spend much time with her, but told her the place and phone number of the local Dem HQ. She's excited about getting a sign!

16. At the risk of some flames
I would say that what i have learned during this election cycle is that many of the people who voted * twice are smarter than I ever gave them credit for.

And I suppose that's what hope -- emerging into reality -- is all about.
