Which candidate utilized that canard?

If it was Kerry, that would be a little too funny considering that he has been smeared the same way...

21. Kerry did indeed.
IIRC, his supporters used to have waffle breakfasts where Dean had rallies and the like. I don't think it hurt Dean, however. Dean -- and this is one of the few good things I have to say about him -- was upfront about his waffling, calling himself the "king of the wafflers" or some such.

Really, the whole "waffling" charge is absurd, and that it actually carries weight with the voting public is a sign of how stupid many people are. Every smart person changes their positions as circumstances change. But now you have such changes being attacked as weaknesses, so what happens? Stubborn idiocy becomes a positive trait in politics.

Perhaps just hurting us is not enough.

13. Look....
It's really easy; stop the "Dean would beat Bush" threads from all the Dean supporters that have started tonight. Dean's not the nominee; Kerry is. That's reality.

Or better yet, take all the threads including the ones you've started tonight and send them to Dean and see what he thinks of them; I'm willing to bet you he'd be as pissed off with this garbage as we are. He'd tell you that instead of trying to rehash the primaries, to help get Kerry elected, because that's what HE'S doing! HE gets it; this is bigger then himself, it's about trying to hget Kerry elected. Why this escapes you is infuriating. Maybe, just maybe the light will turn on for you and others oin this; I hope so.

15. My thread was because I was called a LOSER. I will not lie down for that.
When 37 states did not vote, how dare anyone call Dean or us a loser.

Shame on this board and shame on our Democrats.

20. That 37 states did not get to vote for active candidates?
We have often discussed that among Dean folks. We are not stupid, you know.

It is wrong that the primaries are that way.

Get over your anger toward me, it is non-productive.

22. I'm not angry at you
I'm talking about your thread and all the others that are popping up tonight talking about how Dean should be the nominee instead of Kerry. I want you to send these to him and ask him if he thinks these are counter-productive or not, since it's Kerry who's the nominee, not him.

Please, I want you to do this. If you believe in Dr. Dean to tell you the truth, then send them to him and ask him whether they are counter-productive.

Please.

19. I've kind of noticed that a lot of name calling is going on...
around here, and I thought calling out DU'ers and groups of DU'ers with slurs was against the rules.

9. how do you feel about reliving the early days of DU...?
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 01:34 AM by mike_c
That's increasingly where this election seems to be heading. One of the primary reasons that the Bush/Rove team is so successful is that their opponents allow them to define the context for the entire campaign, so Kerry ends up running a "me too, but I'd do it more/better/sooner/whatever" campaign. Would another of the dem primary candidates have done differently? I don't know. Certainly some would not have. At least a couple had already carved out opposition positions that at least took the debate to Bush on their terms.

There's no point in rehashing the 2004 primaries-- we should have paid more attention to the lessons from the 2000 presidential election.

12. actually, I meant more like...
...the atmosphere prior to the hopefulness going into the 2002 midterms, and like the dispair following them. One of the reasons the 2002 results were so shocking for many here was the sense of utter unreality and deja vu.

I am afraid so.

And while we're at it, I am sick to death of polls! Polls this! Polls that! Who gives a gosh, golly darn! There is only one poll that matters.

Of course we could just appeal to people's better natures!

23. Looks that way...
and thank Goddess, or whatever, that DU isn't actually running the campaign.

I've stopped being pissed at the whiners, but completely ignoring them is proving more difficult.

This is one of the most important elections in my lifetime, and we've got a good candidate. The only thing we can do is whatever we can to get him elected.

Kerry's got a tough job-- running against a ruthless incumbant who's managed to hide his failures and created an atmosphere of crisis. But, Kerry's whole life has been one of coming on strong in the stretch.
