Will there be mass defections from the GOP after the election?
When the GOP won the majority in 1994 there were many Democrats who changed parties. Those switching gave the GOP a majority that took 12 years to catch up to. Do you think that there will be Republicans who switch parties after the election? I'm guessing if some of the more moderate Republicans switch parties we can have a majority that can last for many years.

On the other hand, do we really want them?

1. Yes, and you're right that it will be a problem for the Democratic Party.
A similar thing happened after Watergate. A lot of conservative Republicans became Democrats and as a result, many Democratic candidates were elected in right-leaning communities. Those Democrats had to stay fairly conservative in their votes in order to be reelected. It slowed down the gains made in the late 1960s.

I'm hopeful that after the mess the Republicans have made of the country, a lot of people are ready to give up on conservative ideology entirely.

2. I hope you're right
The conservative ideology as practiced by the neocons is an utter failure.

3. If the Democrats win decisively in November, there will might be
a natural and beneficial weeding out some of the worst elements that have dominated the Republican Party for too long. However, I might be too optimistic about this. There are some "real bad dudes" in the Republican Tent.

in the next election. They can rid themselves of the far RW Religious fanatics, rendering Repubs a totally new party for fundamentalists alone.

JMHO.

Edit: too many typos!
