Newsday: Obama Opens 15-Point Lead On Long Island
Democrat Barack Obama has opened up a double-digit lead over Republican John McCain on Long Island, according to a new Newsday poll -- winning a nearly 2-to-1 edge among voters most fearful of an economic calamity.

The Newsday poll found Obama holding a 15-point lead over McCain among registered voters in Nassau and Suffolk counties, 45 percent to 30 percent. That margin grew to 50 percent to 33 percent among those who say they're most likely to vote Nov. 4 -- a sign that Obama's message of change is resonating with middle-class suburban voters who hold the key to winning the White House.

Kerry won Long Island 52-48 in 2004.

1. Lawng Eyeland
Very good news.

It probably also means that Obama is doing much better with Jews than is commonly assumed.

7. long island is a pretty good barometer of suburbs across the country
we were, after all, the first suburb in the nation.

9. True, but the article states Kerry won...
And that didn't translate into a win nationally.

I'd much rather see state polls or a collection of suburban polls.

6. Long Island, and specifically Nassau County
was at one time the heart of the Northeastern branch of the GOP. I said was, because that was when Republicans used to not insult the northeast and desert it and leave it for dead. Now they've reaped what they've sowed, and registered democrats nearly outnumber registered republicans, which was a 2-1 disadvantage just a decade ago.

8. Sure, I know this.
But it doesn't change the fact Long Island is not going to change this election one bit.

It's not a state, it has no swing votes and as the article stated, Kerry won it. Yeah, Obama is doing better than Kerry in 2004, but will it really impact the outcome in any way? New York is already blue, so it just seems like a silly poll.

Maybe I just can't get excited over city polls like this.
