The debate on Wed, October 15, will be the final one of the election. Obama has won the previous two (and Biden took out Palin). I think the McGrumpy camp is looking at the polls and will try to present a warmer, fuzzier John McCain because his favorable ratings are so bad. All Obama has to do is be his cool, informed, and steady self and he will win this encounter too--and he will stick to the economy and the need for change after 8 years.
If Obama wins this final debate he gets another little bump in the polls which will last a few days and we are in the final two weeks of the campaign, barring some major Obama gaffe (and he isn't the type to make them), Obama will be the next president. McCain can go negative all he wants, but it's not going to work. People are hurting and they want solutions not more of the same old politics. Two weeks isn't nearly enough time for McCain to suddenly change course and offer himself as the change agent. People have seen both McCain and Obama up close now and Obama has shown he can stand on any stage McCain can without being diminished.
1980 was a change election and in the end the refrain of the Obama camp that we will hear over and over will be the same as what Ronald Reagan effectively used against President Carter, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" (or rather eight).
Finally, lets say the polls do get closer look at where the polls are during this period of early voting. Millions of people have already voted across this country during a time when Obama is leading in the polls from anywhere from 5-12 points. In the end I believe the margin for change (meaning Obama) will be so large that even the GOP can't steal it due to increased voter registration (look at how registration across the country has gone up, and it's all favored the Dems) and turnout.
My Friends (I'm reclaiming that from McCain) Barack Obama will win!
