Denizens of DU, I BEG of you....CALL TO ACTION>>>>>>
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 08:20 AM by PretzelWarrior
Please, please, please take a moment by yourself and imagine a McCain/Palin presidency. As you think about the last 8 years of destruction, depression, and devastation both here and abroad. As you remember how both 2000 and 2004 were close but stolen ultimately by the Republicans who could not stand 8 years of the PEOPLE winning under Clinton.

I want you to imagine all states in the "toss up" category narrowly breaking for McCain right at election day even though tracking polls had Obama up by anywhere from 3 to 5 points in eac despite weeks of slimy negative attacks on Obama by McCain personally.

Think about the questions you would ask then. "What could I have done?", "Why didn't I go canvass my neighborhood to encourage voting?", "WHy didn't I volunteer to get people to the polls?"

We simply HAVE to send a message. We MUST let these ridiculous overly fattened pigs wallowing in their own shit know that we have taken the country back, thank you very much.

What are you doing? What will you do? I know Gore and Kerry were flawed candidates. But they were nothing so bad as their opponents. Now, we have a once in a couple of generations type of leader/candidate. I do not want the slimy, basest of humans to decide this election on race, xenophobia, and character assassination. I promise I will do my part. I didn't do enough in 2004. I will change that this year. But I just cannot stress enough how vocal we all need to be in letters to editors of newspapers who give voice to base attacks. How vocal we need to be to our mothers, brothers, preachers, neighbors if they are on the fence or are slamming Obama. How vocal we need to be to our state officials about protecting every citizen's sacred right to vote...

We must not leave any stone unturned in our fight to slam this one home with only 26 days left.

1. dam. Am I on ignore? I can't believe this call to arms gets ZERO hits
yes...a bit preaching to the choir. but you'd think at least an "AMEN" or something. I guess we're all busy posting the latest poll numbers trying to read tea leaves.

22. Amen to all of it-- have donated, canvassed, phone-banked,
obtained window stickers, purchased buttons, yard signs (2), one for us and one for family member, talked to neighbors..

Saturday I will canvass some more. Next week I will phone bank some more-- and happiest of all, I voted early for Obama.

With voter rolls purging going on in states all around us, it's far from time to quit-- the biggest push lies in these last days ahead. We have to keep working-- hard.

I hate when that happens, you toil over the wording and structure of a great piece, hit "post", and nothin'!

Great commentary--

Good morning PW!

But I rec'd you all the same, because it's a reminder to stay focused.

21. Move On has calling parties
that make it very easy (and fun) to make calls to states where your calls can really make a difference. See info right at the top of their page:

8. I don't disagree with your premise, and have been doing what I can
Even though my time is quite limited. However, I believe at this point it is Obama's to lose. Unless, and it's a big one, unless this election is once more ripped off by the 'Pugs. All the polls point to Obama's winning, however there are a number of states where election theft is a real possibility, and that's what worries me the most. Like going in with Kerry, pre-election polls showing he's going to win it, exit polls showing he's got it, and then mysteriously Bush comes out ahead.

What happens then. If this election is stolen, it will be blatant enough that even the most blind voter would be able to see it. What then? Will people hit the streets, or will they hunker down, lick their wounds, and prepare for the insane, desperate times ahead under McCain/Palin?

Furthermore, what happens if Obama wins? Will the radical right, seeing their worst nightmare come to pass, go ballistic, with riots in the streets and that dreaded "lone assasin"? Will they seek retaliation on their friends, family, neighbors, complete strangers who voted for Obama?

There's a lot of weird craziness building on the radical right right now, and it isn't good. I'm not saying this as a reason to not vote for Obama, in fact such bullyboy tactics make me even more determined. But I think that either way, post election is going to be an ugly, ugly time.

10. we will reap the whirlwind from Bush years
it will be an ugly time etven if most in the country agreed with the choice. Stocks, 401k, federal budget, 2 wars plus terrorists gathering....there is much work to be done, and I'm sick of partisan.

I want Obama to read resumes for positions in his cabinet without regard to R, D, or I. He needs the best minds on each issue. I want moderates. No idealogues on either side.

He is going to be scape goated big time by the establishment and the far right as soon as things continue to unravel for a time under his administration as they undoubtedly will.

But we need to fight for him to get in there and be given a chance.

I CANNOT OVERESTIMATE the importance conceptually for a bunch of warmongering, selfish Americans to vote in a guy named Barack Obama. That all by itself sets us in the right direction and gives this nation a fighting chance.

11. Nope, you're not on ignore, I promise. K&R from me.
I went to Democratic headquarters to get lawn signs and bumper stickers and started seriously thinking about how anybody could possibly vote for McCain, given the debates, not to mention what we all see in the news everyday. The news keeps reporting that it's "close." How and why?!:crazy:

The only solution that I could possibly come up with is that nobody's paying attention, not listening to the news and missed the debates. So when they go into the booth, they just vote a straight Republican ticket, as always. At least that's probably true in my neck-of-the woods, where Republican signs are everywhere. You're right, we need to get the word out, and fast!:scared:

The only other explanation I can think of is that they're polling folks who just awoke from long comas or are space aliens who recently landed here. So far, nobody's called me... :-(

12. yeah. no calls from polling groups for me either
I think you COULD be right about some Republicans who are demoralized and would rather tune out. THe only GOOD thing about that is turnout. If they are tuning out they probably will stay away from the voting booths in significant numbers.

17. I agree with you about turnout. That's exactly what we need to win.
If the thousands of newly registered voters show up, and there's no reason to think that they won't, we stand an excellent chance. What we really need is a landslide, making voter fraud impossible, this time around.x(

And they were completely out of Obama buttons when I went to Democratic headquarters, which I take as a good sign, since I live in a very red district. There are always those who pay no attention to the candidates, just vote a straight ticket, like they always do. I know that this is true here, since local Democrats always lose no matter how qualified, and most local races are decided in the primaries, and the Republicans end up running unopposed.:-(

But this race is a little different, since it's almost impossible not to catch something, since it's so highly publicized. And the differences between the candidates are so stark, but then I also felt that way in 2004...:-(

Even my mother, who voted for Bush* twice, told me, early on, that she liked Obama. But then I noticed several letters from the McCain campaign on her table. *sigh* I've had a little fantasy of sticking an Obama sticker on her bumper, and wondering how long it'll take her to notice...

13. Go to my.barackobama.com and register to canvass your neighborhood.
Go to the "Neightbor to neighbor" section.

When you have your list of neighbors, you will also want to have at the ready a list from fightthesmears.com to counter the lies you'll be confronted with by any right-wingers you encounter.

The truth is being distorted by the McPlain gang, and we need to let our friends and neighbors know the truth, and get them to vote!

14. thanks for reminding folks of that
I just printed out a new generated list of mine last night. Every bit helps. If you've never put a yard sign up, try it. If you've never donated for a candidate, try it. If you've never gone to a rally, try it. If you've never called or knocked on neighborhood doors, try it.

ANything you can do that is greater than what you did in 2004 can make all the difference.

Work like hell, but think positive. Thank goodness we're not facing a big apathy problem in this election - that would be doubly maddening.
