Chris Matthews says McCain appealing to "low information voters"
Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 07:18 AM by Gman
(on morning Joe) says the entire strategy is to appeal to low information voters who don't know and don't understand what is going on. It's a very calculated strategy. Palin (who is low information herself) squints and asks "who is Obama" as if she too is trying to understand just who is this black guy that associates with terrorists. This in spite of the fact that Obama has been in the news almost every day since the 2004 convention. It is an unabashed attempt to appeal to low information voters. In other words, McCain is making an appeal for the stupid vote.

Matthews says the strategy is brilliant. I think it's a good political move too. Historically, the GOP has appealed to the stupid vote including fundies and other mouth breathers. It has worked for them in the past. We need to be vigilant. It means lowering our discussion to a level the stupid vote can understand. But I think it needs to be countered.

3. call me a cynic, but it's not easy to counter "stupid" just like it's not easy to counter bigotry
There are a lot of people who simply we cannot court, and would not change their minds even if we could. I know, it sucks to say that, and I am all for trying, but we have to recognize that people are not going to undo years of brainwashing and low-information in less than a month.

4. Very low.
The lowest of the low, I'd say. Another thread mentions a speaker at one of these rallies who says Obama won't wear the flag on his lapel. Stupid and blind, too?

9. Those people are so dumb, they won't be able to find their polling place.
So, maybe not such a brilliant strategy.

10. That's one of Matthews' pet peeves...
He, like Jefferson (see sig. below) thinks that politics is a sacred process, and voting a sacred duty, in any democracy-oriented society. He hates to see it trivialized and when passive ignorance is accepted as a viable alternative to citizen involvement.

11. Sounds to me more like they're shoring up their base.
Maybe it's part of a more public, less direct GOTV effort. Either way, the morans were already fairly likely to lean that way anyhow.

Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're stupid."

16. Tweety was insulting JOE'S MAMA because Joe's Mama went to the Palin Rally

Think about that. Tweety was listening to Joe's show right before he came on and Joe
was telling everyone that his mom went to the Palin rally and said how much she loved Sarah.
