Should this be played as a Senior moment or maybe as John "is still fighting the Vietnam war"?
Gotta be somewhat careful that it does not look like we are picking on an old man...but it certianly cou raid the question od addledness as opposed to age...Fair game?

2. Reminds me of the 60 Minutes Gaffe Where They Asked Him...
In what place has he lived the longest, and McCain said "Hanoi." This answer may have worked 30 years ago, but not after he has been the Arizona Senator for close to 30 years. Does McCain spend the summers in a Hanoi vacation property?

He reminds me of Uncle Charlie on "My Three Sons." (Note: An old joke from an episode of that show, which I am likely the only person to remember.)

Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 03:12 PM by goddess40
or just trying to find a way to slip in he was a POW

I don't find Post Traumatic Stress Disorder funny and I'm not trying to be. It seems to me this man has gone through life denying that he was as deeply affected as he was during his captivity and therefore has never received the proper treatment. It also gives him an excuse to deny the proper treatment to other vets, the "I didn't need it so they don't either" excuse.

Edit: He's under immense stress so it wouldn't surprise me that something repressed might surface.

of his speech and he glanced at his notes. Who knows. Whatever the reason, it was a weird gaffe.

23. Janglin' keys, janglin' keys, bring this liar to his knees-- to the tune of Ramblin Rose
But seriously folks, my kitchen sink reply to the phenomenon:

He can only take the strongest mental focus drugs once in a while. He can't take the strongest cocktail of prescription meds every day. Today he was off them and the phrase slipped out unfiltered.

27. He's as tired of this campaign as we are
I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that in his heart of hearts he wishes November 4 would just hurry up and get here so he can be done with this.

To him this has to be like being down 41 points at the end of the third quarter, knowing you have to go back out there and play that last quarter with no hope whatsoever.

34. We should consider the side-effects of his medications too.
Some of those blood thinners cause dementia and other neurological problems, like memory loss.

I discussed this "problem" with a neurologist who asked, "If the alternative is dying of a heart attack, which would you chose?"

32. Word substitution errors like that can be a sign of early Alzheimers.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C01E5D81339F931A15755C0A9629C8B63

Ronald Reagan demonstrated subtle but clear signs of early dementia -- short-term memory deficits, and word-finding and word-substitution difficulties -- at news conferences and other events in the last years of his presidency (''A Recollection of Early Questions'').

It is highly likely that he had Alzheimer's disease while in office. It is surprising how well a family member, or White House staff, can cover for someone with early dementia.
