"That One' remark was completely innocent
McCain was just have an Alzheimer's moment, and could not remember his opponents name. Oh, and this also explains why he got so mixed up his own record, what day it was, and what state he was in.

11. I think you missed the edge in the OP.
Accusing McCain of having Alzheimers is as bad, or even worse, than accusing him of being "dismissive and disrespectful."

21. Heh, you're right... I did.
Independents and undecideds probably aren't as comfortable with the idea of having an Alzheimers patient as president as the neocon party's voters are.

16. I agree
and I can't believe their are folks trying to down play what he said. I found it very disrespectful and racist. He knows Sen. Obama's name, he even knows his middle name and seemed to have no problems with it until that point.

40. The OP was half right ... It was a senior moment and what ...
it revealed was two layers.

I do believe the clown forget BO's name, and I think he got himself pinned down to having to identify him AND got exposed for his rank condemnation of BO by saying THAT ONE - and I don't care what anyone WANTS to believe, if BO was white, he would not have said "that one." Call it racism, or don't, but he said THAT ONE because in his mind he views BO as less than him, and he slipped up with a dismissive and color oriented identifier - he got outed by his failing mind.

but I often use that term if I am in a discussion and want to belittle my opponent. Of course, that does not mean he is not a racist.

20. I think he really is racist though...
I just sense it in the way he interacts with blacks: he's extremely uncomfortable and patronizing, and is afraid to touch them because he thinks the color will rub off on him. Not looking at Obama was just one of many such instances.

26. Again, I agree. McCain radiates racism. I think that most white people recognize it.
I'm white. I've met many people with racist attitudes exactly like McCain's. Some people excuse it as "people of that age" but there's no excuse. Lot's of people who are now McCain's age and older were marching in Civil Rights protests decades before McCain voted against the MLK holiday for his state!

McCain's a mean racist. That's just one of his horrid attributes.

It's simply unappealing. It stands on it's own as a fuckup by McCain. No need for our side to get batshit illogical over it.

31. In isolation, the comment is not racist. But the lack of respect and professional courtesy
Edited on Wed Oct-08-08 10:45 AM by elkston
reveal McCain's contempt for Obama. And some of that, I believe, has racial overtones.

Its something that not even McCain realizes. In fact, its the kind of ingrained and subtle racism that some whites have and are unware of it until it is pointed out to them. They don't think its racist because there is a "natural" impulse to patronize and underestimate black people.

This is only cured through more interpersonal and professional relationships with blacks. If they are segregated from blacks for large chunks of their life, it only works to further obscure their own racial insensitivity.

38. He's already made Obama's lack of experience a central theme
and we know he's running for president out of bald ambition. Combined with his age and entitled life, all of those things seem way more than adequate to explain McCain's apparent contempt for Obama standing in his way, w/o streeeeeetching to find racism in a decidedly non-racist comment.
